203 hp with more direct steering and firmer suspension than the Tiguan. Everyday fun yes, sports experience no. The 265 hp VZ is the real recommendation.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The EA888 Gen4 245 PS water pump is a known weak point on the Formentor. Affected owners reported sudden overheating events with repair quotes exceeding €2,000. Goodwill from VW is possible but must be actively requested.
Symptoms: All warning lights illuminate, temperature gauge in the red, steam from bonnet, power loss
Gen4 also uses a timing chain with the same Achilles heel as Gen3. Chain elongation is known from around 120,000–150,000 km. Longlife oils considerably accelerate guide rail wear.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, timing errors, engine warning light, rough running
The EA888 Gen3/4 can develop elevated oil consumption through undersized oil scraper rings. The crankcase oil separator can also fail under sporty conditions, directing oil into the intake tract.
Symptoms: Dropping oil level, blue smoke on acceleration or overrun, carbon build-up on intake valves
Camshaft carrier seals and the upper timing chain cover tend to leak on all EA888 variants. Oil collects in the area of the cam phasers and drips to the outside.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, dropping oil level with no visible source, oil smell after driving

Early Terramar owners report software problems immediately at handover: 12V battery fault messages, restricted mode and Cupra Connect disconnections. The model shares control units with the Formentor FL and Leon, which are similarly affected.
The Terramar PHEV shares the 12V system issue of the group platform. Reports from early owners confirm 12V supply fault messages on the Terramar as well. The problem is known from the Formentor FL and Leon PHEV.
The HD Matrix LED headlights on the Terramar can fail as early as 10,000–20,000 km. The control unit overheats, individual modules illuminate significantly dimmer or not at all. Replacement of the entire headlight module may be necessary.
As a platform sibling of the Formentor and Audi Q3, the Terramar is susceptible to the well-known above-average brake disc wear characteristic of the MQB-evo family. VZ variants with the sport brake system are more severely affected.
The keyless entry issue (KESSY) of the MQB-evo platform also affects the Terramar. Door handle sensors operate unreliably. According to owner reports, KESSY is similarly affected on the facelift Formentor and Leon.
Despite the premium price positioning, leather quality on the Terramar is noticeably poor. Several owners report uneven, non-taut leather that looks creased and cracked even at delivery. Seat ventilation is unavailable despite leather upholstery being fitted.
