Engine DW10-C8 ✖ Stay Away! 3,540–12,760 $

2.0 HDi variant with 120 hp in the C8 large MPV. Proven PSA diesel, but only adequately powered in the heavy van.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Minimal van drivetrain

107 hp in the large C8 — just about manages the empty van. With a family and luggage every incline becomes a challenge.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing belt — premature failure at half service interval

C8-specific: timing belt frequently breaks at roughly half the recommended interval (50,000–60,000 km). Interference engine: valve-to-piston contact on breakage. Repair costs £3,000–£4,000. When buying used, always verify service invoices.

Symptoms: Sudden engine shutdown without warning, no restart.

330–660 $ from 60,000 km
!! Automatic gearbox — hydraulic wear

The C8 automatic gearbox develops hydraulic component problems at higher mileages. Jerking, delayed shifting, and complete failure have been reported from as early as 65,000 miles. Gearbox replacement is very costly.

Symptoms: Jerky gear changes, delayed pull-away, missed shifts, gearbox warning light.

1,100–3,850 $ from 120,000 km
!! Injectors — copper seal leakage

Injector copper seals and retaining bolts loosen due to thermal cycling. Leaking seals allow combustion gases into the crankcase and cause oil and soot contamination in the engine bay.

Symptoms: Soot deposits around injectors, oil leaks in engine bay, smoke clouds, rough idle.

220–660 $ from 100,000 km
!! Dual-mass flywheel fails prematurely

The self-adjusting clutch system and dual-mass flywheel in the DW10-powered C8 fail as early as 30,000 km. The clutch's self-adjustment mechanism does not work reliably, causing consequential damage.

Symptoms: Rattling and vibrations when declutching and pulling away, hard gear changes, clutch pedal with unusual resistance. Vehicle no longer pulls away cleanly after declutching.

770–1,650 $ from 80,000 km
!! EGR valve stuck, engine enters limp mode

The EGR valve in the DW10-powered Citroën C8 gums up with soot deposits. The fault message 'exhaust emission anomaly' appears frequently. Cleaning or replacement recommended from 80,000 km for city drivers.

Symptoms: Fault message 'exhaust emission anomaly', engine warning light, rough idle, smoke on acceleration, occasional limp mode.

170–550 $ from 80,000 km
!! Injectors worn, high return flow

The injectors in the DW10-powered C8 wear out and show elevated return-flow quantities again after reconditioning. Multiple reconditioning attempts without lasting success are documented. At high return-flow volumes, rail pressure drops and the engine no longer starts.

Symptoms: Hard or failed engine start, fluctuating idle, stumbling under part load, increased fuel consumption. Diagnostic tool shows high correction values at injectors.

440–2,200 $ from 160,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Body Electric sliding doors open and close by themselves

A C8 with reliably working electric sliding doors is the exception — they open and close by themselves, cannot be opened from outside, or one side fails completely. Central locking on individual doors also fails.

220–1,320 $ from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Rapid brake pad wear and brake servo recall

Brake pads on the C8 can already be worn after 22,000 km. Additionally there was a recall (2007, build years June 2001 to November 2005): water could enter the brake servo and freeze in cold conditions, causing loss of brake assistance.

170–880 $ from 40,000 km
!! Electronics Electric window regulators and comfort equipment unreliable

Electric window regulators do not work reliably — windows stop halfway or require several attempts. Door mirrors do not fold reliably. The trip computer sporadically reports defective ABS and ESP systems.

110–660 $ from 80,000 km
! Interior Interior quality: rattling, creaking and poor build

The C8 interior shows significant quality issues with age: trim panels rattle and creak. Poor build quality means customers have to accept compromises when buying.

20–330 $ from 80,000 km
