Engine DV5-130 ✖ Stay Away! 6,520–22,280 $

Stronger 130 hp variant of the 1.5 BlueHDi. Strong mid-range pull and high efficiency, often paired with the EAT8 automatic. A good replacement for the old 2.0 HDi.

Fun Factor? Decent

Record-economical diesel for high-mileage drivers

The BlueHDi 130 in the C4 X uses under 3.5 litres per 100 km in real-world testing — ranked 8th among the most economical diesels in Motor1's ranking. The 1.5-litre diesel runs quietly and pulls smoothly from low revs; paired with the EAT8 automatic it makes for an effortless package for extreme range. It's not a sporting experience, but rarely visiting a fuel station while covering long distances can be compelling.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain: 7 mm chain breaks — Stellantis recall

The DV5-130 was delivered from 2017 with a critically narrow 7 mm timing chain that can snap under oil-diluted operating conditions. Stellantis recalled 141,700 vehicles; the upgrade kit with an 8 mm chain, new camshafts and improved tensioner permanently resolves the issue.

Symptoms: Rattling noise on start, sudden engine stall, no restart, engine warning light P0016

1,650–6,050 $ from 60,000 km
!! Injection system seizes — fuel circuit contaminated

The DV5-130 high-pressure pump (Bosch) can seize and introduce metal particles into the entire fuel circuit. Affected vehicles require replacement of pump, injectors and fuel tank. Total damage can exceed €6,000.

Symptoms: Hesitation, engine stumbling under load, misfires, heavy smoke, engine stall

2,750–7,700 $ from 50,000 km
!! AdBlue system: crystallisation and sensor failure

The integrated AdBlue tank sensor is known to be unreliable. At temperatures below −11 °C the urea solution freezes and can damage the pump and dosing valve. Crystals block the circuit. Tank replacement is unavoidable as the sensor is not available separately.

Symptoms: SCR warning light, countdown to starter lockout, incorrect AdBlue remaining range display, starting refused after countdown

440–1,430 $ from 70,000 km
!! Timing chain worn prematurely (goodwill programme)

The narrow 7 mm timing chain on the DV5 1.5 BlueHDi wears prematurely, especially with short-trip use and oil dilution from DPF regeneration. Stellantis recalled over 117,000 vehicles in 2023 and extended the warranty to 10 years/240,000 km.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start that disappears after warm-up. With advanced wear: loud continuous chain rattle, engine warning light, engine failure from chain snap.

880–3,300 $ from 90,000 km
!! EGR valve fouled — frequent cleaning required

The EGR valve and inlet tract on the DV5-130 coke up with soot, particularly with frequent urban use and short cold running. PSA recommends inspection every 50,000 km. A faulty valve additionally loads the DPF and forces more frequent regeneration cycles with fuel entry into the oil.

Symptoms: Power loss, hesitation, engine warning light P0401, increased consumption, limp mode

220–660 $ from 80,000 km
!! EGR valve cooked up, intake tract dirty

The EGR valve and intake tract of the DV5 coke up with soot deposits. The high-pressure EGR system on the BlueHDi is particularly susceptible. DPF clogging from incorrect EGR signals is a secondary consequence.

Symptoms: Hesitation at mid-range revs, poor cold start, elevated emissions, engine warning light, power loss. Cleaning or valve replacement required.

220–660 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Brakes Premature brake disc wear

Like other C4 models, C4 X owners report rapidly wearing brake discs. The braking system is a known weak point across this generation of Citroën/PSA compact cars.

170–500 $ from 50,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment crashes and app connection faults

The MY-Citroën infotainment system on the C4 X shows occasional crashes and faulty Bluetooth/smartphone connections. Remote functions of the Citroën app only work with limited reliability.

0–220 $ from 15,000 km
! Electronics Door mirrors do not fold out

Defects in electrically folding door mirrors are reported on the C4 X. Corroded contacts or failed mirror motors prevent folding — a typical problem on Citroën models of this platform.

90–440 $ from 50,000 km
! HVAC A/C cools insufficiently

C4 X owners report that the air conditioning does not cool sufficiently in high outside temperatures. The A/C is a known problem area on PSA compact models; compressor and refrigerant leak are the causes.

110–1,320 $ from 70,000 km
