Citroën C1
Toyota three-cylinder with maintenance-free timing chain and VVT-i valve timing. Extremely reliable with regular oil changes; typical weak points are limited to spark plugs, throttle body, and slight rough running as an inherent three-cylinder characteristic. Mileages above 200,000 km are achievable with correct servicing.
Upgraded city runabout
72 hp in the C1 II — marginally more than the base model. Adequate for the city; still marginal on the motorway.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Early 1KR-FE units (up to around 2009) had a sheet-metal water pump housing that leaked early. Toyota/PSA switched to an aluminium casting variant (OE 16100-09530 / PSA 1201.L3) that holds up far better.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external hose failure, moisture under the car, rising coolant temperature, engine temperature warning
A failed ignition coil in the 1KR-FE three-cylinder causes noticeably rough misfires, since the engine is then running on just two cylinders. Pull-away is significantly weaker and the car jerks under acceleration.
Symptoms: Pronounced juddering and vibrations, severely reduced power, engine warning light, fault codes P0300–P0303
The 1KR-FE is prone to misfires from around 60,000 km caused by worn spark plugs or failed ignition coils. As a three-cylinder it is more sensitive to a dropped cylinder than four-cylinder units.
Symptoms: Jolting under acceleration, rough idle, increased fuel consumption, engine warning light (P030x)
The 1KR-FE throttle body is prone to carbon deposits that cause rough idle and hot-start problems. After cleaning, the ECU requires a throttle body adaptation, otherwise elevated idle will follow.
Symptoms: Rough or hunting idle, hot-start problems, engine runs unevenly after throttle input
On older 1KR-FE engines the timing chain tensioner can wear and rattle briefly on cold starts. The chain itself is robust, but a faulty tensioner can lead to chain stretch over time.
Symptoms: Metallic rattle immediately after cold start, disappears after a few seconds, louder when oil level is low
The 1KR-FE EGR valve can coke up in predominantly urban driving and stick open, leading to power loss and increased fuel consumption.
Symptoms: Power loss especially in the lower rev range, increased fuel consumption, engine warning light, fault code P0400 (EGR fault)
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Vehicles built in September–October 2014 left the factory with an undersized steering shaft. In the worst case the steering column can break and cause steering failure. Citroën replaced the affected shaft under a recall in 2016.
On the C1 II too, brake disc wear is the biggest known problem. MOT testers flag worn brake discs above average, and the handbrake regularly fails inspection.
In all build years of the C1 II, misadjusted headlights and defective tail and indicator lights are flagged at the MOT. The fault rate is significantly above the class average.
From the second MOT inspection, the rejection rate for the exhaust system due to rust rises noticeably. Brake lines also begin to corrode.
Door seals distort and door locks can stick. Quarterlight windows do not seal tightly, leading to wind noise and moisture ingress into the interior.
