Punchy DS4 diesel

150 hp HDi in the DS4 — confident drivetrain, well suited to long distances.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing belt — interference engine

Interference engine: timing belt snap leads to piston-to-valve collision. Manufacturer recommends 80,000–120,000 km or 5 years. Used C5 II vehicles frequently lack complete service records. Having the kit on hand saves time at the workshop.

Symptoms: Sudden engine stall, no restart, metallic rumbling.

390–720 $ from 100,000 km
!! DPF/FAP — clogging from short-trip use

PSA FAP system with Eolys additive: the particulate filter only regenerates at sufficient temperature (motorway driving). Short-trip use prevents complete regeneration and the filter clogs. Failed regeneration attempts increase oil dilution.

Symptoms: FAP warning light, power reduction, increased fuel consumption, limp mode.

550–1,980 $ from 120,000 km
!! Turbocharger — bearing damage from carbon

The VNT turbo suffers from carbon build-up from the EGR system. Vanes lock up, bearings wear from insufficient oil supply with extended change intervals. Repair costs €500–1,500.

Symptoms: Whistling noise under acceleration, power loss, blue exhaust, oil in the intake hose.

550–1,650 $ from 130,000 km
!! EGR valve — soot sticking

The EGR valve on the DW10FD engine clogs with soot deposits, especially with frequent urban driving. A sticky valve feeds incorrect feedback to the ECU and causes engine hesitation between 1,500–2,500 rpm.

Symptoms: Hesitation between 1,500–2,500 rpm, engine warning light, occasional stalling.

170–500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Injector return leak-off excessive

The DW10-150 injectors wear internally and show excessive return flow in the leak-off. Above 120 ml total leak-off per 2 minutes at idle, rail pressure is no longer sufficient to start. O-ring replacement on the solenoid is often enough.

Symptoms: Hard or no-start, unstable idle, increased fuel consumption, engine hesitation at part load. Leak-off test shows more than 30 ml/cylinder over 2 minutes at idle.

170–660 $ from 140,000 km
!! AdBlue tank pump mechanism corroded

The AdBlue pump is installed inside the tank and corrodes from the aggressive urea solution. P20E8 or P20EE are typical fault codes. The entire tank must be replaced as the pump is not available separately. Up to €1,300.

Symptoms: Exhaust aftertreatment fault message, fault codes P20E8/P20EE/P20F6, countdown to engine lockout, abnormal smell from the exhaust. Engine will not start once the limit is reached.

770–1,650 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Steering Electric power steering fails

The electric power steering in the DS4 I can fail — the steering servo motor gives up, making the steering extremely heavy. Causes are typically ECU faults or defective connectors at the column motor.

440–1,320 $ from 80,000 km
!! Electronics BSI control unit triggers false fault warnings

The central BSI control unit in the DS4 I is prone to software faults that simultaneously trigger warning lights for ABS, ESP, ASR and the parking brake. The cause is often moisture in connectors or a weak 12V battery.

220–880 $ from 70,000 km
!! Rust Rust at wheel bearing seats of ABS sensors

Corrosion at the ABS sensor wheel bearing seats causes the sensors to seize and become impossible to remove. The underfloor can also rust broadly on neglected vehicles.

110–440 $ from 100,000 km
!! Brakes Brake disc wear and brake squeal

Brake discs on the DS4 I wear above average, especially in urban use. Surface rust after extended standstill causes loud squealing on the first braking application. Front discs are more severely affected.

220–660 $ from 60,000 km
