Citroën C4 Picasso
Punchy 136 hp variant of the 2.0 HDi with VGT turbo. Good pull and sufficient power for heavier vehicles. Popular engine in the C4 and C5.
Van diesel with 140 hp
140 hp in the C4 Picasso II — punchy drivetrain for the family van.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Interference engine: timing belt snap causes valve-to-piston contact. Early failures documented from 60,000 km. Repair after snap: €2,000–6,000. Always check for proof of belt kit replacement at purchase.
Symptoms: Sudden engine stall without warning, no restart, metallic noise.
Injectors develop internal leaks from worn sealing elements. Bosch system: excessive fuel return flow reduces rail pressure. Low-quality fuel accelerates wear. Replacement should be done as a set.
Symptoms: Starting difficulties, rough idle, engine warning light, increased fuel consumption.
The DMF on the DW10BTED4 frequently wears from 80,000–100,000 km. Excessive play can damage the clutch disc and cause secondary costs. Replacement only makes sense together with a clutch kit.
Symptoms: Vibrations when pulling away, hammering noise at idle, gear change problems.
Variable vanes on the VNT turbo seize from soot deposits (EGR exhaust gases). Fault P0234 or P0299 in the ECU. Cleaning is possible but recurrence is frequent. Short-trip use worsens the problem.
Symptoms: Limp mode, power loss, black smoke, OBD fault code.
The DW10-136 high-pressure pump (Bosch CP1H) loses delivery pressure at higher mileages. In winter the pump often cannot build sufficient injection pressure of 300 bar on a cold start. Engine will not start or runs roughly.
Symptoms: Hard cold start at temperatures below 0°C, engine only starts after prolonged cranking. Once warm, restarts fine. Diagnostic pressure shows only 130–150 bar instead of 300 bar.
The DW10-136 swirl flaps seize from EGR soot deposits. A broken flap fragment risks engine damage. Typical on vehicles that do a lot of short trips and whose DPF regenerates frequently.
Symptoms: Engine limp mode from heavy soot build-up, power loss at low revs, DPF regeneration fails, exhaust system fault message, engine warning light.
Vehicle Weaknesses 4
The C4 Picasso II shows above-average brake disc wear at the first and second MOT. MOT reports record above-average defect rates for brake discs despite fewer functional problems.
According to ADAC breakdown statistics, the C4 Picasso II regularly underperforms the average. Battery problems on 2013 build years and ignition failures in 2017 are the most frequently documented breakdown points.
From five years on, steering joints, axle springs and dampers on the C4 Picasso II show above-average MOT defect rates. Driveshafts remain a weak point across all build years.
A recall was issued for Citroën Grand C4 SpaceTourer build years 2019–2022 due to faulty calibration of the urea pump diagnostics in the engine ECU, causing false fault messages.
