Engine DV6-92 ✖ Stay Away! 2,410–8,170 $

Mid-range output of the 1.6 HDi with 90–92 hp. Best-selling diesel in many Citroën models. Good compromise between economy and everyday usability.

Fun Factor? Decent

Proven small car diesel

92 hp HDi in the C3 II — well balanced and economical, ideal for city use.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! VNT turbo: vanes seized by oil coke

The VTG turbocharger's variable vanes seize up due to oil coke deposits. The engine enters limp mode or abruptly loses boost. The cause is almost always spent oil with high soot content after excessively long oil change intervals.

Symptoms: Sudden power drop, limp mode, whistling noise, black smoke, boost pressure fault P0234

990–2,420 $ from 130,000 km
!! Injectors leaking — oil and fuel contaminate turbo

Leaking injectors on the 92 hp variant push fuel into the engine oil; the elevated fuel content in the oil significantly accelerates turbo damage. Detection is difficult since the oil level appears to rise due to fuel entry.

Symptoms: Strong fuel smell in oil, rising oil level, blue smoke, turbo noises

330–1,760 $ from 120,000 km
!! EGR valve blocked: limp mode and starting difficulties

The EGR valve on the DV6-92 tends to block with soot, especially on vehicles with frequent short-trip use. A blocked valve triggers limp mode and prevents restarting after a hot engine shut-off.

Symptoms: Engine hard to start or stalls after starting, limp mode, engine warning light P0401

220–550 $ from 100,000 km
!! Inlet manifold and swirl flaps coked up

Swirl flaps in the DV6-92 inlet manifold coke up from oil mist in the crankcase breather and recirculated exhaust gases. Broken flap fragments can be drawn into the engine and cause severe damage.

Symptoms: Hesitation at low revs, fault codes P2004/P2006, smoke, power drop

170–660 $ from 110,000 km
!! Intake swirl flaps seized

The intake swirl flaps coke up and seize from EGR soot deposits. The actuator motor overloads and fails. Broken flap fragments risk engine damage from foreign body ingestion.

Symptoms: Engine limp mode from actuator overload, swirl flap fault code, power loss especially in the lower rev range, DPF regeneration fails.

220–770 $ from 110,000 km
! DPF differential pressure sensor faulty

The DPF differential pressure sensor fails and reports incorrect values to the ECU. As a result, regeneration triggers too early or not at all, leading to DPF clogging.

Symptoms: Fault message 'exhaust system defective', engine warning light, increased fuel consumption from frequent regeneration cycles, occasional engine limp mode.

90–330 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Recall — inadequate brake pads and ABS faults 2009–2010

Vehicles from December 2009 to July 2010 had brake pads that did not meet manufacturer specifications and may have produced insufficient braking force. Faulty ABS/ESP hydraulic components were also fitted.

0–0 $
!! Suspension Worn springs, dampers and steering joints

Springs, shock absorbers and steering joints are flagged above average at the MOT on the C3 II. Worn ball joints and steering joints also regularly cause MOT failures after 5–7 years.

170–550 $ from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Above-average brake disc wear

Brake discs on the C3 II wear too frequently and need changing often. The MOT flags the brakes above average across all build years. Older examples also show rusty brake lines.

90–310 $ from 50,000 km
!! Electronics Defective lighting and earth cable failure

Headlights, tail lights and indicators are flagged excessively often at the MOT in all build years. On 2010–2011 models, the earth cable to the gearbox can break, causing a sudden engine failure.

30–280 $ from 70,000 km
! Rust Rust on exhaust and door flanges

Exhaust system rust from the second MOT inspection is a known problem. Doors and bonnet rust from the inside at the flanges, as does the tailgate. Particularly on vehicles without regular cavity protection.

110–550 $ from 90,000 km
