Citroën Berlingo
PSA electric motor with 100 kW peak power and 50 kWh battery. Around 350 km WLTP range. Low maintenance, good everyday suitability for city use.
Electric Berlingo
136 hp in the ë-Berlingo — silent and eco-friendly; range adequate for everyday use.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Some ë-C4/ë-Berlingo units show a state of health below 100% straight from the factory. The usable capacity of the nominally 50 kWh battery is realistically only around 45 kWh. In winter, range drops to 60–70% of the rated figure. Annual degradation rate approximately 1–2%.
Symptoms: Significantly lower range than stated, range estimate unreliable.
Stellantis recalled ë-C4 and ë-Berlingo vehicles due to faulty software calibration in the traction battery control unit. The fault causes incorrect cell voltage or temperature readings and can trigger loss of drive while moving. A software update at the dealership is required.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of drive while moving, warning message 'electric traction system'.
Some ë-C4 owners report problems with AC charging (Type 2) while DC CCS charging works. Software updates can temporarily disable charging capability, radio, reversing camera, and navigation. A dealer visit is required to resolve the issue.
Symptoms: Charging aborts, infotainment unresponsive, charge flap won't open, fault warning light.
The ë-C4 does not include a heat pump as standard. Heating draws heavily from the main battery; range drops to 60–70% in winter. The optimistic onboard computer display frequently overestimates remaining range.
Symptoms: Range in cold weather well below the brochure figure, range display fluctuates significantly.
The 12V auxiliary battery in the Citroën ë-C4 (EM-100/136 kW) discharges during extended standby because control units fail to enter sleep mode. Known software bug. After 6 weeks of standby the battery can be deeply discharged.
Symptoms: Vehicle won't start after extended standby, app connection lost, all warning lights active. Vehicle does not respond to remote key.
After multiple rapid-charging sessions at high temperatures a 'drive system fault' appears. The vehicle reduces power to protect the battery. The thermal protection system is likely activating. Usually recovers after a longer cooling break.
Symptoms: Warning message 'drive system fault', severe power reduction, vehicle crawls along. Usually fully functional again once the battery has cooled.
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
According to the KBA, loads can cause damage to the tie rods, resulting in loss of driving stability and increased accident risk. PSA had to recall around 8,900 vehicles worldwide (build years 2019 and 2020).
In the third generation too, above-average brake disc wear remains a known MOT issue. Brake hoses are also flagged more frequently than on comparable vehicles.
Chronic drivetrain oil loss continues into the third Berlingo generation. Oil drips into the MOT inspection pit even at early inspections — leaking shaft seals are the most common cause.
After the mandatory BSI update as part of the auxiliary heater recall, some Berlingo III vehicles lose comfort functions — including keyless entry and other ECU functions.
On the Berlingo III, suspension bearings, mounts and shock absorbers should be checked carefully when buying used. Front axle anti-roll bar links and springs wear faster than expected under heavy load.
