Engine EB2-DT ✖ Stay Away! 5,670–14,800 $

Turbocharged variant of the PSA three-cylinder with an oil-bathed timing belt. The belt runs in engine oil and can delaminate prematurely on short trips with long oil change intervals, blocking the oil passages. Stellantis granted an extended warranty of 10 years/175,000 km for affected production years in 2024.

Fun Factor? Decent

Purposefully powered family van

The 1.2-litre three-cylinder with 110 hp gets on with its job in the Berlingo III solidly: city, country roads, and occasional motorway stints are handled without complaint. With a full load and on long motorway sections it shows its limits — the small turbo becomes audible and has to work. For the van-intended purpose of the Berlingo it is the right companion.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Wet belt deterioration in oil bath

Oil-bath timing belt delaminates due to fuel dilution of the oil; stop-start operation of the mild hybrid system adds additional belt stress. Newer Gen 3 engines from 2022 feature a revised design.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, engine noises, power drop, potential engine damage

880–1,650 $ from 70,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption from coked piston rings

Oil scraper rings coke up from short-trip use with direct injection. In extreme cases the engine consumes 3 litres per 1,000 km. Stellantis acknowledged the problem and offers goodwill up to 175,000 km.

Symptoms: Significantly elevated oil consumption, blue smoke clouds under acceleration, oil warning light

1,650–3,850 $ from 75,000 km
!! Turbocharger failure due to oil pressure problems

The turbocharger is sensitive to degraded or fuel-diluted oil. Oil passages clogged by wet-belt particles can destroy the turbo bearings. Frequently a secondary failure following wet-belt problems.

Symptoms: Whistling turbo noise, blue smoke, power loss, oil pressure loss

990–2,420 $ from 90,000 km
!! Fuel dilutes oil — oil dilution turbo

In the EB2-DT 1.2 Turbo, frequent short-trip operation can cause petrol to enter the engine oil and severely reduce its viscosity. The diluted oil no longer provides adequate lubrication for the turbocharger or the oil-bathed timing belt.

Symptoms: Petrol smell when removing oil cap, oil level rises above maximum, oil of thin consistency, increased consumption due to poor lubrication

60–330 $ from 50,000 km
!! Coolant loss — head gasket

In the EB2-DT 1.2 Turbo, overheating events or material fatigue can cause the head gasket to fail. Coolant enters the combustion chamber or the oil. The three-cylinder is particularly susceptible when oil dilution damage is present.

Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, coolant level drops without external leakage, mayonnaise residue on oil cap, engine overheating

660–1,650 $ from 110,000 km
!! Intake valve carbon deposits from direct injection

Direct injection without port fuel wash leads to deposits on the intake valves, made worse by recirculated crankcase gases. Power loss and starting difficulties at higher mileages.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss, starting difficulties, increased fuel consumption

220–660 $ from 80,000 km
!! Wastegate bearing worn — rattling

The wastegate bearing on the small turbocharger of the EB2-DT 1.2 Turbo shows wear at higher mileages. Typical rattling on load changes is an early sign. The turbocharger must then be reconditioned or replaced.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on load changes, slight power loss, occasional hissing, turbocharger noise at idle

550–1,650 $ from 120,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Recall: damaged tie rods — loss of driving stability (build years 2019–2020) 2019–2020

According to the KBA, loads can cause damage to the tie rods, resulting in loss of driving stability and increased accident risk. PSA had to recall around 8,900 vehicles worldwide (build years 2019 and 2020).

0–0 $
!! Brakes Brake discs and hoses prematurely worn

In the third generation too, above-average brake disc wear remains a known MOT issue. Brake hoses are also flagged more frequently than on comparable vehicles.

170–610 $ from 50,000 km
!! Other Oil loss from drivetrain also in generation 3

Chronic drivetrain oil loss continues into the third Berlingo generation. Oil drips into the MOT inspection pit even at early inspections — leaking shaft seals are the most common cause.

170–660 $ from 60,000 km
!! Electronics BSI update disables comfort functions

After the mandatory BSI update as part of the auxiliary heater recall, some Berlingo III vehicles lose comfort functions — including keyless entry and other ECU functions.

110–550 $
! Suspension Check suspension bearings and shock absorbers when buying

On the Berlingo III, suspension bearings, mounts and shock absorbers should be checked carefully when buying used. Front axle anti-roll bar links and springs wear faster than expected under heavy load.

220–770 $ from 80,000 km
