Engine DV5-100 ✖ Stay Away! 6,270–28,660 $

Modern 1.5-litre diesel from the Stellantis era with SCR cat and DPF. Economical and clean, a good replacement for the 1.6 HDi. Belt-driven timing.

Fun Factor? Decent

Base Berlingo diesel

102 hp in the new Berlingo III — economical and adequate for urban deliveries.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain (7 mm) snaps — engine damage possible

The DV5-100 was initially shipped with a 7 mm wide timing chain that stretches prematurely and can snap under short-trip use and fuel dilution of the oil. Stellantis recalled over 141,700 vehicles and upgraded to a stronger 8 mm chain.

Symptoms: Clattering rattle on cold start (chain tensioner), sudden engine stall, engine warning light, no restart

1,320–5,500 $ from 60,000 km
!! High-pressure pump seizes — metal particles in fuel system

The Bosch high-pressure fuel pump on the DV5-100 can seize due to a design fault. Metal particles then contaminate the entire fuel circuit; injectors and fuel tank must be completely replaced. Damage often occurs below 50,000 km.

Symptoms: Hesitation and stumbling under load, engine misfires, no or difficult restart, engine warning light

2,200–6,600 $ from 45,000 km
!! AdBlue tank sensor defective — starter lockout

The DV5-100 shares the PSA-wide AdBlue tank problem: the integrated level sensor fails and the tank cannot be repaired individually. In winter the urea solution crystallises and additionally blocks pump and lines.

Symptoms: AdBlue warning message, countdown to starter lockout, implausible range display

440–1,320 $ from 70,000 km
!! Oil dilution from DPF regeneration

During DPF regeneration, post-injection fuel is sprayed in; some passes the cylinder walls into the engine oil. With frequent short trips the oil dilutes heavily, the oil level appears to rise. Bearing and turbo damage may follow. Stellantis offers extended goodwill coverage of 10 years/240,000 km.

Symptoms: Significantly rising oil level (oil smells of diesel), frequent DPF regeneration cycles, knocking noises after long urban driving, increased oil consumption.

550–8,800 $ from 80,000 km
!! DPF regenerating excessively often in urban use

The DV5-100 regenerates every 40–70 km in heavy urban use, far more often than normal. This noticeably increases fuel consumption, and fuel dilution of the oil significantly accelerates wear of the timing chain and bearings.

Symptoms: Sharply elevated fuel consumption, rising oil level, frequent brief smoke from exhaust, DPF warning message

660–1,650 $ from 90,000 km
!! AdBlue pump fault, urea system blocked

The PSA AdBlue pump weakness also affects the DV5: the pump PCB corrodes, urea crystallises in the system and blocks the injector or tank. P20EE or P20E8 is the most common fault code. Repair costs up to €2,000.

Symptoms: Exhaust aftertreatment warning light, countdown to engine lockout, abnormal ammonia smell from the exhaust, fault codes P20E8/P20EE, vehicle will not start after reaching the limit.

440–2,200 $ from 70,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other Recall: damaged tie rods — loss of driving stability (build years 2019–2020) 2019–2020

According to the KBA, loads can cause damage to the tie rods, resulting in loss of driving stability and increased accident risk. PSA had to recall around 8,900 vehicles worldwide (build years 2019 and 2020).

!! Brakes Brake discs and hoses prematurely worn

In the third generation too, above-average brake disc wear remains a known MOT issue. Brake hoses are also flagged more frequently than on comparable vehicles.

170–610 $ from 50,000 km
!! Other Oil loss from drivetrain also in generation 3

Chronic drivetrain oil loss continues into the third Berlingo generation. Oil drips into the MOT inspection pit even at early inspections — leaking shaft seals are the most common cause.

170–660 $ from 60,000 km
!! Electronics BSI update disables comfort functions

After the mandatory BSI update as part of the auxiliary heater recall, some Berlingo III vehicles lose comfort functions — including keyless entry and other ECU functions.

110–550 $
! Suspension Check suspension bearings and shock absorbers when buying

On the Berlingo III, suspension bearings, mounts and shock absorbers should be checked carefully when buying used. Front axle anti-roll bar links and springs wear faster than expected under heavy load.

220–770 $ from 80,000 km
