Engine Hemi-5.7-LC โ€“ Be Careful 3,850โ€“13,490 $

5.7L Hemi V8, cast iron block, pushrod two-valve โ€” 375 hp and that unmistakable idle burble. MDS deactivates cylinders 1, 4, 6, 7 under light throttle โ€” deactivated lifters run dry on cam lobes, metal debris destroys the camshaft. Class action: Petro v. FCA. Manual cars skip MDS entirely โ€” no deactivation hardware, no lifter lottery. That is THE buying tip. Software delete via DiabloSport/HP Tuners: $400-650, prevents activation but lifters stay, voids warranty, costs 2-4 MPG. On 0W-40 at 5,000 mile intervals, the bottom end is solid.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Wide, heavy, with real V8 character

The first 300C with the Hemi was a sensation in the US. Gangster looks, RWD, 340 hp at an entry price that embarrassed the competition. MDS in the automatic 300C is the risk.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! MDS lifter failure โ€” camshaft destruction

MDS deactivates 4 cylinders under light load. Deactivated lifter rollers run dry, metal debris destroys camshaft. Class action: Petro v. FCA (1:22-cv-00621). Engine replacement ~$5,000. Manual cars have NO MDS โ€” this failure doesn't apply to stick-shift Challengers.

Symptoms: Loud ticking progressing to knocking, misfires, check engine light, metal shavings in oil

1,650โ€“5,500 $ from 160,000 km
!! Water pump failure

Plastic impeller separates or bearing wears. Weep hole dripping coolant is the early warning. Bearing failure causes pulley wobble.

Symptoms: Coolant puddle under front, squealing noise, overheating, pulley wobble

440โ€“1,320 $ from 160,000 km
! Hemi tick โ€” harmless or catastrophic

Metallic ticking from valvetrain on cold start. Can be harmless exhaust manifold leak or dangerous MDS lifter damage. Tick that persists past warmup is a red flag for lifter failure.

Symptoms: Ticking on cold start, may disappear after warmup (exhaust) or persist and worsen (lifter)

0โ€“550 $ from 75,000 km
! Exhaust manifold bolt breakage

Steel bolts on aluminum heads โ€” different thermal expansion snaps bolts after heat cycles. Ticking on cold start that disappears when metal expands is the classic symptom.

Symptoms: Metallic ticking on cold start, disappears after warmup, exhaust smell in cabin

440โ€“1,650 $ from 210,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Steering Power Steering Pump Leak

Hydraulic power steering pump leaks through worn seals, hoses, or fittings. Low fluid makes steering heavy and damages the pump further. Pump replacement $300-1,200.

330โ€“1,320 $ from 130,000 km
!! Cooling Oil Cooler O-Ring Leak

O-rings at the engine oil cooler harden and flatten โ€” oil or coolant leaks around the cooler area. Can lead to oil contamination in coolant or vice versa when cooling and oil circuits are combined.

330โ€“1,100 $ from 130,000 km
! Interior Window Regulator Cable Failure

Window regulator cable snaps, window no longer functions. Very frequently reported, all doors affected. Replacement $320-715.

350โ€“780 $ from 100,000 km
! Interior Interior Door Handle Break โ€” Plastic Failure

Interior door handle breaks at the frequently-cycled connection point. Plastic at handle-to-cable linkage fails over time. Replacement affordable ($72-80 parts), shop cost approx. $50-130.

90โ€“280 $ from 110,000 km
! HVAC HVAC Blend Door Actuator Failure

Small gears in the blend door actuator strip out, causing persistent clicking noise from the dashboard. Repair requires full dashboard removal โ€” very labor intensive.

220โ€“990 $ from 110,000 km
