โ€“ Be Careful
Engine Hemi-6.4-LC โ€“ Be Careful 10,340โ€“36,480 $

392 cubic inches, 4.09-inch bore, 485 hp โ€” the biggest factory NA V8 of the 2020s. Forged steel crankshaft where the 5.7 uses cast iron โ€” the real upgrade. Powder metal rods, cracked-cap design. Pistons are hypereutectic, not forged โ€” ring lands too thin for boost, supercharger kits crack them. Same MDS lifter failure on automatics โ€” engine replacement $15,000. Manual 392s skip MDS. VVT and active intake give 45 lb-ft more than the old 6.1 SRT. On 0W-40 at 5k intervals, the rotating assembly outlasts the car.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

First SRT8 300 โ€” sleeper icon

431 hp in a full-size sedan โ€” understated looks with boulevard performance. Cheap to find today, but 6.1L maintenance costs and MDS risk apply.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! MDS lifter failure โ€” $15,000 engine replacement

Same MDS failure as the 5.7 but with higher stakes. Deactivated rollers destroy camshaft, metal contaminates oil. Engine replacement $4,800-15,000 โ€” replacements can fail the same way. Class action: Petro v. FCA. Manual 392s have NO MDS.

Symptoms: Progressive ticking to knocking, misfires, check engine light, metal in oil

5,280โ€“16,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! Piston failure under forced induction (modified only)

Stock cast pistons not designed for boost. Ring land too close to crown, ring gap too wide. Supercharger or turbo kits crack pistons. Forged internals required before adding boost. Only affects modified engines.

Symptoms: Misfires under boost, loss of compression, knocking, catastrophic failure

3,300โ€“13,200 $
! Exhaust manifold stud breakage

Cast-iron manifold on aluminum head โ€” thermal expansion mismatch breaks studs. Grade 8 replacement studs (6509863AA) are the fix.

Symptoms: Ticking on cold start from exhaust leak, disappears as metal expands

440โ€“1,760 $ from 210,000 km
! Hemi tick โ€” cold start noise

Same tick as the 5.7 from MDS valvetrain. Tick persisting past warmup signals lifter damage. 0W-40 synthetic at 5,000 mile intervals is the best prevention.

Symptoms: Ticking on cold start, may persist or disappear after warmup

0โ€“550 $ from 75,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Steering Power Steering Pump Leak

Hydraulic power steering pump leaks through worn seals, hoses, or fittings. Low fluid makes steering heavy and damages the pump further. Pump replacement $300-1,200.

330โ€“1,320 $ from 130,000 km
!! Cooling Oil Cooler O-Ring Leak

O-rings at the engine oil cooler harden and flatten โ€” oil or coolant leaks around the cooler area. Can lead to oil contamination in coolant or vice versa when cooling and oil circuits are combined.

330โ€“1,100 $ from 130,000 km
! Interior Window Regulator Cable Failure

Window regulator cable snaps, window no longer functions. Very frequently reported, all doors affected. Replacement $320-715.

350โ€“780 $ from 100,000 km
! Interior Interior Door Handle Break โ€” Plastic Failure

Interior door handle breaks at the frequently-cycled connection point. Plastic at handle-to-cable linkage fails over time. Replacement affordable ($72-80 parts), shop cost approx. $50-130.

90โ€“280 $ from 110,000 km
! HVAC HVAC Blend Door Actuator Failure

Small gears in the blend door actuator strip out, causing persistent clicking noise from the dashboard. Repair requires full dashboard removal โ€” very labor intensive.

220โ€“990 $ from 110,000 km
