BMW xDrive30d

N57D30 3.0L Diesel 258 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2013–2018
– Be Careful
Engine N57D30 – Be Careful 13,300–55,100 €

Successor to the M57 with aluminium crankcase and piezo injectors. Extremely smooth and torquey. EGR cooler, DPF and turbocharger are the main wear points.

Fun Factor? Decent

Diesel Six-Pot

R6 diesel in the big SUV β€” refined and muscular.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain breaks / guide rails shatter

The N57D30 timing chain can break; plastic guide rails break and block the oil pump. Damaged valves and bearing shells follow. No reliable audible advance warning.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start (warning sign!). Often no advance warning β€” engine dies suddenly.

2,000–6,000 € from 130,000 km
!! Connecting rod / main bearing damage at high mileage

Main bearings and connecting rod bearings wear from around 150,000–200,000 km. The aluminium crankcase with steel bearing housings has differing thermal expansion coefficients. Bearing shells can spin β€” catastrophic engine damage.

Symptoms: Dull knocking or hammering from the engine block under load; oil pressure warning; metallic tapping; engine oil with metallic particles

3,000–12,000 € from 180,000 km
!! EGR cooler leak β€” coolant loss

Leaking EGR coolers cause gradual coolant loss. BMW carried out a voluntary service campaign. Overheating from coolant shortage risks a cracked cylinder head. Repair costs without goodwill are very high.

Symptoms: Gradual coolant drop with no visible external leak; white-blue exhaust smoke; sweet smell inside the cabin; engine warning light; overheating warning

350–4,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbocharger failure (bi-turbo)

The N57 bi-turbo system shows bearing wear at high mileage. Broken turbine blades can destroy the cylinder bores and cause total engine failure. Repair costs often exceed €8,000.

Symptoms: Whistling or rattling from the turbo area; sharply reduced power delivery; blue or white exhaust smoke; engine warning light; limp mode

2,000–9,000 € from 170,000 km
!! Injectors worn

Diesel injectors wear at high mileage. Diagnosis via cylinder balance test and return flow measurement. Individual injector replacement possible at around €450 including installation.

Symptoms: Rough running especially at idle (engine "runs like a tractor"), hesitation, increased fuel consumption, smoke clouds.

400–2,500 € from 200,000 km
! Glow plug failure and control unit defect

Glow plugs and the glow plug control unit fail regularly at higher mileages. The fault memory often shows all plugs as defective even though only the control unit is faulty. Cold-start problems and DPF overload possible in frost.

Symptoms: Glow plug warning light stays on; difficult starting below 5Β°C; slight judder in the first minute after cold start

150–600 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 9

!! Suspension Air Suspension Porous from 150,000 km

Air springs become porous at 150,000–200,000 km. Aftermarket air springs (Continental/Arnott) cost around €115 each β€” a BMW dealership quoted around €900 for both springs. TÜV regularly flags suspension issues.

300–1,500 € from 150,000 km
!! Other Recall: EGR Module Fire Risk β€” Diesel

Four-cylinder diesel engines (up to Nov. 2016) and six-cylinder diesels (up to June 2015) were recalled due to defective EGR modules posing a fire risk. Affected vehicles must have the EGR module replaced.

0–0 €
!! Gearbox xDrive Transfer Case Wear

Mixed tyres significantly accelerate transfer case wear (different rolling circumferences). Juddering at partial throttle signals imminent failure.

1,500–5,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Body Panoramic Sunroof: Mechanical Failure

The panoramic sunroof on the X5 F15 shows failures due to broken guide rails or drive motors. The roof can no longer open or stops mid-travel. Repair is labour-intensive.

500–2,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Brakes Rear Brake Callipers Seizing

The rear brake callipers on the X5 F15 tend to seize at high mileages, causing uneven brake wear and grinding. Typical issue on large, heavy vehicles with an electric parking brake.

400–1,200 € from 90,000 km
!! Suspension Suspension Springs Broken

The high kerb weight of the X5 F15 leads to broken suspension springs at higher mileages, especially with the M Sport suspension. TÜV inspectors flag this regularly from the third inspection onwards.

400–1,200 € from 120,000 km
!! Gearbox xDrive Transfer Case β€” Juddering on Pull-Away

The xDrive transfer case on the F15 is very sensitive to mismatched tyre rolling circumferences and neglected oil changes. Around 15% of F15 owners report transfer case problems before 160,000 km.

1,500–6,000 € from 110,000 km
!! Body Panoramic Roof Water Ingress β€” Blocked Drains

The panoramic roof drainage hoses block or kink and redirect water into the cabin. BMW has classified the drainage hoses between body panels as non-separately replaceable.

800–3,000 €
! Electronics iDrive and Online Services Failures

The NBT iDrive system in the F15 shows crashes and ConnectedDrive connectivity issues at higher vehicle ages. Software updates help but the underlying hardware limitations remain.
