N57D30 3.0L Diesel 313 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2014–2018
– Be Careful
Engine N57D30 – Be Careful 10,300–41,500 €

Successor to the M57 with aluminium crankcase and piezo injectors. Extremely smooth and torquey. EGR cooler, DPF and turbocharger are the main wear points.

Fun Factor? Decent

Diesel Coupe-SUV

R6 diesel in the coupe-SUV β€” better than it sounds.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain breaks / guide rails shatter

The N57D30 timing chain can break; plastic guide rails break and block the oil pump. Damaged valves and bearing shells follow. No reliable audible advance warning.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start (warning sign!). Often no advance warning β€” engine dies suddenly.

2,000–6,000 € from 130,000 km
!! Connecting rod / main bearing damage at high mileage

Main bearings and connecting rod bearings wear from around 150,000–200,000 km. The aluminium crankcase with steel bearing housings has differing thermal expansion coefficients. Bearing shells can spin β€” catastrophic engine damage.

Symptoms: Dull knocking or hammering from the engine block under load; oil pressure warning; metallic tapping; engine oil with metallic particles

3,000–12,000 € from 180,000 km
!! EGR cooler leak β€” coolant loss

Leaking EGR coolers cause gradual coolant loss. BMW carried out a voluntary service campaign. Overheating from coolant shortage risks a cracked cylinder head. Repair costs without goodwill are very high.

Symptoms: Gradual coolant drop with no visible external leak; white-blue exhaust smoke; sweet smell inside the cabin; engine warning light; overheating warning

350–4,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbocharger failure (bi-turbo)

The N57 bi-turbo system shows bearing wear at high mileage. Broken turbine blades can destroy the cylinder bores and cause total engine failure. Repair costs often exceed €8,000.

Symptoms: Whistling or rattling from the turbo area; sharply reduced power delivery; blue or white exhaust smoke; engine warning light; limp mode

2,000–9,000 € from 170,000 km
!! Injectors worn

Diesel injectors wear at high mileage. Diagnosis via cylinder balance test and return flow measurement. Individual injector replacement possible at around €450 including installation.

Symptoms: Rough running especially at idle (engine "runs like a tractor"), hesitation, increased fuel consumption, smoke clouds.

400–2,500 € from 200,000 km
! Glow plug failure and control unit defect

Glow plugs and the glow plug control unit fail regularly at higher mileages. The fault memory often shows all plugs as defective even though only the control unit is faulty. Cold-start problems and DPF overload possible in frost.

Symptoms: Glow plug warning light stays on; difficult starting below 5Β°C; slight judder in the first minute after cold start

150–600 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Other N20 Timing Chain Elongation

The four-cylinder N20 is prone to premature timing chain elongation. Neglect risks chain jump and catastrophic engine damage. Rattling on cold start is the first warning sign.

1,200–3,500 € from 90,000 km
!! Cooling Water Pump Failed

The electric water pump on the N55 six-cylinder is prone to premature failure. Overheating threatens if coolant stops circulating. Known issue across comparable BMW model lines.

400–900 € from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Automatic Gearbox Jerks on Shifts

The automatic gearbox shifts roughly and judders on pull-away or gear changes. Typically occurs from 70,000–90,000 km. Regular ATF oil changes every 60,000 km can help.

200–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Front Axle Suspension Wear

Tie rod ends, ball joints and control arms on the front axle wear out sooner than the BMW average. Noticeable at TÜV inspections. Road surface imperfections cause banging noises.

300–800 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Electric Tailgate Failed

The electric tailgate motor often fails from as early as 25,000 km. The tailgate can then only be opened manually or fails to close correctly. Typical F26 issue.

300–700 € from 35,000 km
