B48B20 2.0L Turbo 156 hp Automatic Front-wheel drive SUV 2022–2026
– Be Careful
Engine B48B20 – Be Careful 4,150–15,900 €

Modular four-cylinder turbo, the workhorse of the current model range. Very broad power spectrum from 135 to 306 hp. Reliable; watch oil consumption and turbocharger at high mileage.

Fun Factor? Decent

Solid Turbo Petrol

Reliable four-cylinder turbo — competent in everyday use, but without a goosebump moment.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain guide rail breaks

Timing chain guide rail can break; chain jump and engine damage follows. More common on early production years and with spirited driving.

Symptoms: Rattling, clattering from the engine, sudden power loss, engine damage

2,000–4,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Oil filter housing leaking — coolant loss

Oil filter housing with integrated oil/water heat exchanger leaks. Coolant loss and overheating risk from about 60,000 km.

Symptoms: Coolant level warning, oil puddle under engine, overheating

400–1,200 € from 60,000 km
!! Coolant bleed line at cylinder head breaks

A plastic bleed line between the cylinder head and expansion tank becomes porous and breaks. Coolant loss follows; the mounting location is difficult to access, so labour costs dominate.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level; coolant warning on the instrument cluster; faint sweet smell; no visible puddle under the car

300–700 € from 70,000 km
! Wastegate linkage rattles on cold start

The wastegate linkage on the B48 turbocharger has too much play by design and rattles, especially on cold start and at low revs. BMW offers a repair kit (e-actuator 11655A7A286) as a goodwill measure.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering from the turbo area on cold start and at idle; disappears at higher revs

0–300 € from 40,000 km
! Intake valve carbon build-up from direct injection

As a direct-injection engine the B48 does not wash the intake valves with fuel. Oil vapour from crankcase ventilation and EGR gases form deposits that reduce flow and cause misfires.

Symptoms: Stumbling on cold start; power loss at high revs; rough idle; increased fuel consumption

400–900 € from 120,000 km
! Crankcase ventilation in valve cover failed

The crankcase ventilation (PCV) integrated into the valve cover wears out and allows oil into the intake tract. Because PCV and valve cover are a single unit on the B48, the entire cover must be replaced.

Symptoms: Increased oil consumption (>0.5 L/1,000 km); blue smoke on cold start; oil in the intake line; rough idle

350–700 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: Integrated Braking System (IBS)

A signal fault in the motor position sensor of the electric brake actuator can deactivate hydraulic brake assistance. ABS and DSC may fail. Affected: production June 2022 to August 2024 (46,967 vehicles in Germany).

0–0 €
!! Electronics iX1: Charging System Failure (CCU Fault)

On the BMW iX1, charging at wallboxes and AC charge points aborts after a few kWh. The cause is a faulty CCU (Charging Control Unit). Occurs at various charge points — not an infrastructure issue.

500–2,500 €
!! Electronics Infotainment Software Crashes and Connectivity Issues

The iDrive system with OS8 and OS9 frequently shows connectivity errors (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto), voice control crashes and delayed profile loading on startup. OS9 requires a hardware replacement of the head unit.

0–1,500 €
!! Electronics iX1: AC Charging Abort Due to CCU Software Fault

On the iX1 U11, AC charging aborts shortly after starting with a 'charging error' message. The cause is a faulty CCU software module. BMW made a software update available through dealers from December 2023.

0–1,500 € from 8,000 km
!! Electronics 'Drivetrain Malfunction' — Limp Mode from Sensor/Wiring Fault

The warning message 'Proceed with caution — drivetrain malfunction' puts the car into limp mode. Causes on the U11 include a faulty NOx sensor, damaged wiring harness or EGR valve issues.

200–1,500 € from 30,000 km
! Brakes Brake Noise Due to Stick-Slip Effect

On both combustion and hybrid variants, a loud creaking or squealing occurs when coasting and braking lightly. BMW describes this as a stick-slip effect and has not yet found a permanent fix. iX1 variants are particularly affected due to infrequent brake use.

0–500 €
! Interior B-Pillar and Door Seal Creak While Driving

At motorway speeds above 120 km/h or on uneven roads, creaking and rattling occurs around the driver's door and B-pillar. BMW has a fix: adhesive tape strips on A- to C-pillars and anti-creak spray.

0–200 €
! HVAC Climate Control Regulates Temperature Unreliably

The X1 U11's automatic climate control is not a true full-auto system — air vents and blower level often need to be adjusted manually. In heating mode, vents appear to block with no airflow.

0–400 € from 10,000 km
