– Be Careful
Engine B38B15 – Be Careful 6,700–24,000 €

Modular three-cylinder turbo with a lively character. Turbocharger and timing chain are wear items; vibration balance handled by a balancer shaft.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Three-Cylinder in a BMW

Three cylinders in a BMW — that feels wrong. Vibrates at idle and doesn't sound like Munich.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Timing chain elongation

Same timing chain issue as N20 and B48. Plastic guide rails wear out, chain elongates. Slightly less loaded on the 3-cylinder.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine check light, rough idle

1,500–3,500 € from 70,000 km
!! Crankshaft bearing half-shell undersized (early production)

Early B38 engines (manual gearbox, built before April 2015) had an undersized crankshaft half-shell bearing. BMW switched to 360° bearings and replaced affected engines as a goodwill gesture (up to 120,000 km / 5 years).

Symptoms: Knocking or hammering from the engine block under load; oil pressure drop; in extreme cases engine seizure due to spun bearing

3,000–8,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Turbocharger shaft seal leaking — oil consumption

Turbocharger shaft seals become porous and allow oil into the combustion process. On the 3-cylinder, exhaust gas pressure pulses cause higher wear than on four-cylinders.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start or wide-open throttle, oil consumption above 0.5 L/1,000 km, oil mist in intercooler, smoke after long motorway run.

600–2,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Coolant loss — hairline cracks in cooling system

Plastic cooling system components (expansion tank, hoses, flanges) develop hairline cracks and lose coolant gradually. On the 3-cylinder, thermal loads are higher due to uneven combustion.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level without visible external leak, occasional coolant smell on exit, coolant warning light after longer drive.

100–400 € from 90,000 km
! Intake valve carbon build-up (3-cylinder direct injection)

As a direct-injection engine the B38 does not wash the intake valves with fuel. Blowby vapours and EGR recirculation promote coking. The three small-displacement cylinders are more sensitive than large four-cylinders.

Symptoms: Stumbling and misfires on cold start; power loss especially at low loads; uneven idle; increased fuel consumption

400–800 € from 130,000 km
! EGR valve fouled and sticking

With frequent urban and short-trip driving the EGR valve gets clogged with soot deposits and sticks. Cleaning is often enough; in advanced cases the valve must be replaced.

Symptoms: Stumbling on cold start, increased fuel consumption, engine warning light (EGR fault), rough idle, occasional stalling in city traffic.

200–600 € from 80,000 km
i 3-cylinder vibrations and engine mount wear

The 3-cylinder B38 produces more NVH than a four-cylinder due to its firing order. Engine mounts wear earlier from the uneven loading; steering column and steering wheel can vibrate.

Symptoms: Noticeable vibrations at idle, especially through steering wheel and gear knob; vibrations increase with failed engine mounts after 100,000 km

200–600 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: Integrated Braking System (IBS)

A signal fault in the motor position sensor of the electric brake actuator can deactivate hydraulic brake assistance. ABS and DSC may fail. Affected: production June 2022 to August 2024 (46,967 vehicles in Germany).

!! Electronics iX1: Charging System Failure (CCU Fault)

On the BMW iX1, charging at wallboxes and AC charge points aborts after a few kWh. The cause is a faulty CCU (Charging Control Unit). Occurs at various charge points — not an infrastructure issue.

500–2,500 €
!! Electronics Infotainment Software Crashes and Connectivity Issues

The iDrive system with OS8 and OS9 frequently shows connectivity errors (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto), voice control crashes and delayed profile loading on startup. OS9 requires a hardware replacement of the head unit.

0–1,500 €
!! Electronics iX1: AC Charging Abort Due to CCU Software Fault

On the iX1 U11, AC charging aborts shortly after starting with a 'charging error' message. The cause is a faulty CCU software module. BMW made a software update available through dealers from December 2023.

0–1,500 € from 8,000 km
!! Electronics 'Drivetrain Malfunction' — Limp Mode from Sensor/Wiring Fault

The warning message 'Proceed with caution — drivetrain malfunction' puts the car into limp mode. Causes on the U11 include a faulty NOx sensor, damaged wiring harness or EGR valve issues.

200–1,500 € from 30,000 km
! Brakes Brake Noise Due to Stick-Slip Effect

On both combustion and hybrid variants, a loud creaking or squealing occurs when coasting and braking lightly. BMW describes this as a stick-slip effect and has not yet found a permanent fix. iX1 variants are particularly affected due to infrequent brake use.

0–500 €
! Interior B-Pillar and Door Seal Creak While Driving

At motorway speeds above 120 km/h or on uneven roads, creaking and rattling occurs around the driver's door and B-pillar. BMW has a fix: adhesive tape strips on A- to C-pillars and anti-creak spray.

0–200 €
! HVAC Climate Control Regulates Temperature Unreliably

The X1 U11's automatic climate control is not a true full-auto system — air vents and blower level often need to be adjusted manually. In heating mode, vents appear to block with no airflow.

0–400 € from 10,000 km
