B47D20 2.0L Diesel 136 hp Automatic SUV 2022–2026
– Be Careful
Engine B47D20 – Be Careful 4,850–22,500 €

Modular four-cylinder diesel, successor to the N47. Timing chain now at the front of the engine β€” the N47's biggest problem is eliminated. EGR and DPF remain wear items.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Underpowered

Too little engine for too much car. Uphill it becomes a test of patience.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain elongation on early models (2014–2016)

Early B47 engines (2014–2016) are prone to premature chain elongation. The tensioner can no longer compensate. Rattling on cold start is the typical warning sign before chain snap and engine damage.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering on cold start; subsides after warm-up; in advanced cases audible during driving; MIL may illuminate

1,500–4,500 € from 120,000 km
!! EGR cooler leak with fire risk (recall)

Overheating and leaking EGR coolers can vaporise glycol and trigger self-ignition. BMW recalled affected vehicles. If coolant enters the combustion chamber, hydraulic lock and engine damage are possible.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible leak; whitish smoke from exhaust; rough idle; MIL; limp mode; rarely smoke from engine bay

850–4,000 € from 100,000 km
!! DPF clogging with short-trip use

With frequent short-trip use the DPF never reaches sufficient regeneration temperature. Soot accumulation blocks the filter and the engine enters limp mode. Long-term, oil level rises due to fuel intrusion.

Symptoms: MIL with message 'Particulate filter fault'; severe power loss; increased fuel consumption; black exhaust smoke on cold start; oil level rising

300–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Injector wear at high mileage

Common-rail injectors operate at up to 2,500 bar and wear at higher mileages. Knocking noise on cold start and misfires on individual cylinders. Replacement is complex and expensive.

Symptoms: Knocking noise on cold start; fault code 'injection quantity out of tolerance' or 'cylinder X misfire'; stumbling; increased consumption

700–2,400 € from 160,000 km
!! Electric thermostat and water pump failure

From about 150,000 km onwards, failures of the electronic thermostat and electric water pump become more frequent. Overheating without early warning is possible. Replacing both parts simultaneously is recommended.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises unusually quickly or too high; heater blows cold; fault codes relating to the water pump; rarely a sudden failure

600–1,200 € from 150,000 km
! EGR valve coked up

Primarily urban short-trip use causes the EGR valve to coke up. Power loss and increased emissions.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough running, engine check light, black smoke

200–800 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Other Recall: Integrated Braking System (IBS)

A signal fault in the motor position sensor of the electric brake actuator can deactivate hydraulic brake assistance. ABS and DSC may fail. Affected: production June 2022 to August 2024 (46,967 vehicles in Germany).

0–0 €
!! Electronics iX1: Charging System Failure (CCU Fault)

On the BMW iX1, charging at wallboxes and AC charge points aborts after a few kWh. The cause is a faulty CCU (Charging Control Unit). Occurs at various charge points β€” not an infrastructure issue.

500–2,500 €
!! Electronics Infotainment Software Crashes and Connectivity Issues

The iDrive system with OS8 and OS9 frequently shows connectivity errors (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto), voice control crashes and delayed profile loading on startup. OS9 requires a hardware replacement of the head unit.

0–1,500 €
!! Electronics iX1: AC Charging Abort Due to CCU Software Fault

On the iX1 U11, AC charging aborts shortly after starting with a 'charging error' message. The cause is a faulty CCU software module. BMW made a software update available through dealers from December 2023.

0–1,500 € from 8,000 km
!! Electronics 'Drivetrain Malfunction' β€” Limp Mode from Sensor/Wiring Fault

The warning message 'Proceed with caution β€” drivetrain malfunction' puts the car into limp mode. Causes on the U11 include a faulty NOx sensor, damaged wiring harness or EGR valve issues.

200–1,500 € from 30,000 km
! Brakes Brake Noise Due to Stick-Slip Effect

On both combustion and hybrid variants, a loud creaking or squealing occurs when coasting and braking lightly. BMW describes this as a stick-slip effect and has not yet found a permanent fix. iX1 variants are particularly affected due to infrequent brake use.

0–500 €
! Interior B-Pillar and Door Seal Creak While Driving

At motorway speeds above 120 km/h or on uneven roads, creaking and rattling occurs around the driver's door and B-pillar. BMW has a fix: adhesive tape strips on A- to C-pillars and anti-creak spray.

0–200 €
! HVAC Climate Control Regulates Temperature Unreliably

The X1 U11's automatic climate control is not a true full-auto system β€” air vents and blower level often need to be adjusted manually. In heating mode, vents appear to block with no airflow.

0–400 € from 10,000 km
