N46B20 2.0L 150 hp Manual Rear-wheel drive SUV 2009–2012
– Be Careful
Engine N46B20 – Be Careful 6,363–18,250 €

Four-cylinder with variable valve lift (Valvetronic). Smooth and frugal; the Valvetronic eccentric shaft is the known weakness.

Fun Factor? Decent

Commuter Spec

Solid four-cylinder — handles the commute, but won't raise the heartbeat.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain stretched / chain tensioner defective

The timing chain stretches prematurely due to a faulty chain tensioner. Plastic guide rails become brittle and break. Engine damage from chain jump is possible.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start in the first few seconds, which improves or worsens as the engine warms up.

800–2,200 € from 130,000 km
!! Valvetronic eccentric shaft / actuator motor defective

The Valvetronic actuator motor or eccentric shaft fails at around 150,000 km. Fault code 2A67 is typical. The engine runs but without variable valve lift control — increased fuel consumption, limp mode.

Symptoms: Judder at 2,000 rpm; rough cold start; increased fuel consumption; engine stumbling when pulling away; fault code 2A67

400–1,200 € from 150,000 km
! VANOS solenoid valve defective

The VANOS solenoid valves wear and cause rpm fluctuations, power loss, and starting difficulties, especially at low revs.

Symptoms: Rpm fluctuations at idle, power loss at low revs, occasional starting difficulties.

150–500 € from 100,000 km
! Valve stem seals and increased oil consumption

From around 190,000 km valve stem seals tend to harden, leading to blue smoke and increased oil consumption. The vacuum pump and cam cover gasket are further typical sources of oil loss.

Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start or when accelerating, increased oil consumption (more than 0.5 L/1,000 km).

400–1,200 € from 190,000 km
! VANOS seals worn

The N46 VANOS sealing rings wear from around 100,000 km. Oil pressure drop in the VANOS unit causes timing issues. Replacing the seal kit is cheaper than a complete unit swap.

Symptoms: Ticking or tapping noise after cold start (sounds like a diesel); power loss below 3,000 rpm; increased fuel consumption; rough idle

250–850 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Gearbox xDrive Transfer Case Bearing Damage

The transfer case (ATC350) on xDrive variants suffers premature wear of the needle bearing at the propshaft take-off. Noises from around 100,000 km; complete failure is possible.

2,400–5,900 € from 100,000 km
!! Rust Rust on Suspension and Underbody

Steering knuckles, strut mounts, driveshaft flanges and underbody components corrode early. BMW classifies it as surface rust and declines warranty.

200–800 € from 60,000 km
!! Suspension Premature Shock Absorber Wear

Front axle shock absorbers wear out from around 130,000 km. Secondary damage through increased tyre wear and heavier loading of control arms and springs is possible.

700–1,600 € from 135,000 km
!! Electronics Battery Drain and Multiple Electrical Failures

The 12V on-board electrics are sensitive to voltage drops. A weak battery can cause simultaneous failure of ABS, DSC, xDrive and the fuel pump. A faulty main relay (K2003a) is also a known single cause.

13–400 € from 100,000 km
!! Steering Electric Steering Notches / Lane Instability

The electric power steering on early production years can slightly 'notch' when turned. The car then wanders off course at higher speeds. A revised steering rack (PUMA) was fitted from model year 2011/2012.

600–1,800 € from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Premature Wheel Bearing Wear

Wheel bearings — especially at the rear — wear out prematurely on the E84 from as early as 20,000–50,000 km. If both sides fail, they should be replaced simultaneously.

250–600 € from 40,000 km
!! Cooling Coolant Loss (N20 Engine)

On the N20 petrol engine, the oil filter module and porous coolant hoses can leak — sometimes only visible at operating temperature. In the worst case, coolant enters the engine oil.

200–1,200 € from 80,000 km
