BMW M3 Competition
The S58 is 90% a new design compared to the S55 β BMW has addressed most weaknesses of its predecessor. Forged pistons instead of cast, 2 kg lighter crankshaft with integrally forged oil pump and chain drive sprockets, one-piece crank hub from the factory, revised con rod bearings with larger contact area. The closed-deck block is further stiffened and comfortably handles the standard pressure of 1.7 bar. New is the active oil suction system: a separate pump actively draws oil to the critical bearing points during hard cornering, braking and acceleration β the S55's oil-sloshing problem on track is significantly reduced β though not fully eliminated under sustained track abuse. Plus an improved windage tray in the crankcase against oil foaming. Sonically sharper than the S55: less bassy, instead a more metallic, direct roar under load with aggressive overrun crackling in Sport mode. In the CSL with titanium exhaust almost reminiscent of the S65 V8 character. Three points to check: main bearing shell recall (production calendar weeks 29β40/2021) β incorrectly hardened bearings can fail without warning. Proactively swap plastic charge pipes for aluminium units. Walnut blasting every 60,000β80,000 km against intake valve carbon from direct injection. In standard form the most reliable BMW M engine of all time β those who don't tune and observe these three points have 200,000+ km ahead of them.
510 hp, sharpened chassis, stronger brakes
Competition with 510 hp and rear-wheel drive: stiffer engine mounts, firmer springs, more aggressive mapping. The extra 30 hp are most noticeable between 4,000 and 6,500 rpm. The better M3 on track, only marginally harder in daily use than the base. Without xDrive the rear stays lively β those who value traction over fun take the xDrive.
Engine Weaknesses 9
The oil cooler is positioned exposed behind the front grille. Stone impact can damage seals or perforate the cooler itself. Oil loss is a risk.
Symptoms: Oil patch under the vehicle, oil level warning, oil smell
Like the predecessor S55, connecting rod bearings can wear prematurely, especially with software tuning and track use.
Symptoms: Knocking from the engine block, oil pressure warning, metallic particles in the oil
BMW recalled G80/G82/G83 M3/M4 vehicles with S58 engines from certain 2021 production weeks. A manufacturing defect in the main bearing shells required complete engine disassembly including crankshaft and oil sump.
Symptoms: No driver-perceptible symptoms β purely preventive recall. Left untreated, bearing seizure and catastrophic engine failure are at risk.
Under extreme longitudinal or lateral acceleration (track, spirited driving), oil can be sloshed away from the pump pick-up. Despite the active oil suction system, a residual risk remains under sustained track abuse.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light briefly on aggressive cornering or hard acceleration; MIL on repeated occurrence; engine protection shutdown
On S58 vehicles with the six-speed manual gearbox, clutch failures have been documented from 30,000β35,000 km. Excessive clutch wear, slipping and gearshift problems on the motorway. NHTSA complaint ODI 11714063 confirms the issue.
Symptoms: Clutch slip, difficulty engaging gears, clutch smell; in advanced cases complete clutch loss while driving.
Some G80/G82 owners report injectors operating at elevated voltage, which promotes early failure. Isolated cases with repeated injector replacements have been documented.
Symptoms: Hesitation under load, misfires, engine warning light, fault memory entries relating to the injection system.
The electric coolant pump and thermostat of the S58 show premature wear, especially after track use. Coolant loss and temperature spikes without a clear overheating warning are possible.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible leak, temperature display fluctuates, engine warning light; in advanced cases thermal protection shutdown.
Standard charge pipes and hose connections can split or develop leaks at full throttle. Same problem as on the predecessor S55 β aftermarket charge pipes are widely used as a precaution.
Symptoms: Pronounced power drop under load, hissing from the engine bay, boost pressure deviation fault, engine warning light.
As a pure direct-injection engine without port injection, the S58 accumulates oil carbon deposits on the inlet valves. Power loss and rougher throttle response from 60,000β80,000 km are typical. Walnut blasting is the recommended maintenance measure.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, slightly rougher throttle response, increased fuel consumption.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Steering rack produces a feeling like a rolling weight when turning. BMW confirmed the defect after initial dismissal. Replacement steering columns with 3β4 week delivery lead time. Observed from as low as 600 km.
The curved display module shows sporadic static image interference. Replacement under warranty at around β¬5,000 list price. Occurs on vehicles with fewer than 2,000 km.
Condensation enters through a defective vent membrane, and spontaneous cracks appear along internal seams without any impact damage. BMW denies warranty coverage for cracks. Design revision only with the 2025 model.
Clunking in the front suspension at low speed over parking lot speed bumps. Steering rack identified as the main cause β same weakness as the F80 predecessor.
Stock brake pads squeal chronically β BMW calls this normal for M vehicles. Switching to street pads (Dixcel Type M, ATE Ceramic) eliminates the problem permanently.
The stiff sport suspension transmits vibrations to interior trim. Most common locations: small glove box below the light switch strip and speaker in the dashboard.
