BMW 530i
Direct injection six-cylinder with 258/272 hp. Same high-pressure pump issue as the N53B25; otherwise a refined and powerful engine.
Stratified-Charge Swan Song
Direct-injection R6 โ BMW's last petrol engine with stratified charge. A footnote in history.
Engine Weaknesses 7
As with the N53B25, the N53B30 piezo injectors fail frequently, especially those with an index below 09. The unit price of new index-11 injectors was recently โฌ290โ370; nationwide supply shortages occurred.
Symptoms: Hesitation and misfires, hard acceleration surges, extended cold start (4โ5 seconds), engine warning.
The Pierburg electric water pump typically fails between 120,000 and 150,000 km โ the integrated control electronics fail first. Complete failure without warning is possible; overheating within minutes.
Symptoms: Sudden temperature spike, coolant warning message, engine warning light, cooling fan runs continuously, pump goes silent.
The direct injection high-pressure pump fails and causes extended cold starts or hesitation under full load. Fault codes 2FBF, 2FBE are typical. Specialist workshop repair ~โฌ400; BMW >โฌ2,000.
Symptoms: Very extended cold start (several seconds), hesitation under hard acceleration, fault memory entry for fuel pressure.
The NOx sensor fails regularly. The NOx catalyst ages and must be replaced. Costs: NOx sensor ~โฌ600, NOx cat >โฌ2,000. Typical fault code 30E9.
Symptoms: Significantly increased fuel consumption (no more stratified charge mode), fault code 30E9 (NOx catalyst ageing), engine warning light.
The N53B30 is prone to high oil consumption above 1 litre per 1,000 km. Causes are valve stem seals and piston rings. Regular oil level checks are essential.
Symptoms: Oil level drops quickly, blue smoke especially on cold start or under load, oil smell.
The VANOS camshaft adjustment solenoid valves become fouled and wear at higher mileages. Idle hunting and hesitation in the lower rev range are the first symptoms.
Symptoms: Rpm fluctuations, hesitation at low revs, occasional starting difficulties, VANOS deviation fault code.
Direct injection without port injection means fuel no longer flows across the intake valves. Oil mist from the CCV coats the valves with carbon โ periodic walnut-blast cleaning is required.
Symptoms: Power loss especially on cold start, slightly increased fuel consumption, occasional hesitation, rough running after prolonged idling.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
The optional active steering can rotate the steering wheel up to 90 degrees or lock the steering due to AFS control unit faults. Recalibration or control unit replacement (over 1,000 โฌ) required.
Rust bubbles form in the seam between the rear window and boot lid. Occurs even on well-maintained garaged vehicles because moisture gets trapped in the hemmed edge.
The iDrive infotainment system overheats due to a failed cooling fan โ system no longer starts or runs with limited function. Fan runs continuously and drains the starter battery.
Aluminium front control arms on the E60/E61 are particularly prone to wear. Regular inspection is necessary as wear affects handling and tyre wear.
Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket become porous on older E60s. Oil smell in engine bay and visible oil traces. On the M57N2 diesel, crankcase ventilation often also causes oil burning.
Rubber bushings in the rear integral arms wear from around 120,000 km and produce creaking noises. Worn shock absorbers and axle bearings are typical age-related issues.
