B47D20 2.0L Diesel 190 hp Automatic Rear-wheel drive Sedan 2019–2026
– Be Careful
Engine B47D20 – Be Careful 7,500–38,300 $

Modular four-cylinder diesel, successor to the N47. Timing chain now at the front of the engine — the N47's biggest problem is eliminated. EGR and DPF remain wear items.

Fun Factor? Decent

Reliable Diesel

Modern four-cylinder diesel — frugal and long-lived, but not a driver's engine.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Timing chain elongation on early models (2014–2016)

Early B47 engines (2014–2016) are prone to premature chain elongation. The tensioner can no longer compensate. Rattling on cold start is the typical warning sign before chain snap and engine damage.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling or clattering on cold start; subsides after warm-up; in advanced cases audible during driving; MIL may illuminate

1,500–4,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! EGR cooler leak with fire risk (recall)

Overheating and leaking EGR coolers can vaporise glycol and trigger self-ignition. BMW recalled affected vehicles. If coolant enters the combustion chamber, hydraulic lock and engine damage are possible.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops without visible leak; whitish smoke from exhaust; rough idle; MIL; limp mode; rarely smoke from engine bay

850–4,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! DPF clogging with short-trip use

With frequent short-trip use the DPF never reaches sufficient regeneration temperature. Soot accumulation blocks the filter and the engine enters limp mode. Long-term, oil level rises due to fuel intrusion.

Symptoms: MIL with message 'Particulate filter fault'; severe power loss; increased fuel consumption; black exhaust smoke on cold start; oil level rising

300–1,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Injector wear at high mileage

Common-rail injectors operate at up to 2,500 bar and wear at higher mileages. Knocking noise on cold start and misfires on individual cylinders. Replacement is complex and expensive.

Symptoms: Knocking noise on cold start; fault code 'injection quantity out of tolerance' or 'cylinder X misfire'; stumbling; increased consumption

700–2,400 $ from 160,000 km
!! Electric thermostat and water pump failure

From about 150,000 km onwards, failures of the electronic thermostat and electric water pump become more frequent. Overheating without early warning is possible. Replacing both parts simultaneously is recommended.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises unusually quickly or too high; heater blows cold; fault codes relating to the water pump; rarely a sudden failure

600–1,200 $ from 150,000 km
! EGR valve coked up

Primarily urban short-trip use causes the EGR valve to coke up. Power loss and increased emissions.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough running, engine check light, black smoke

200–800 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Other 48V starter-generator — recall, bolting fault

BMW recalled approximately 37,000 vehicles in 2024/2025 due to faulty 48V starter-generator bolting. Affected vehicles show battery charging problems and risk losing drive assistance.

0–0 $
!! Electronics 48V mild hybrid system fault

On vehicles with the 48V mild hybrid system (320d, 330d, M340d), fault messages appear: 'Battery cannot be charged' or 'Do not continue driving'. Issue usually lies in the 48V sub-network.

500–2,000 $ from 60,000 km
!! Steering Electric steering catches around centre

The G20's electromechanical steering shows resistance around centre — small steering inputs feel jerky and require increased effort. BMW has prescribed full rack replacement as the fix.

800–2,500 $ from 40,000 km
!! Steering Steering rack — rolling-weight sensation and noise

Steering rack feels like a rolling weight when turning. BMW confirmed the defect after initially dismissing complaints. Replacement columns on 3–4 week lead time. Observed from as low as 600 km.

0–3,000 $ from 5,000 km
!! Electronics Curved display — static and image distortion

The curved display module shows sporadic static image interference. Warranty replacement at around 5,000 € list price. Occurs on vehicles with under 2,000 km.

0–5,500 $ from 5,000 km
!! Body Headlights: condensation and spontaneous cracks

Condensation through a defective vent membrane plus spontaneous cracks along inner seams with no impact marks. BMW refuses warranty for cracks. Design revision only with the 2025 model.

1,400–6,500 $ from 20,000 km
! Suspension Adaptive suspension excessively harsh

The adaptive suspension on the G20 is perceived as very harsh — every road imperfection is transmitted directly into the cabin. Sport mode barely differs from Comfort mode — consistent owner feedback.

200–800 $
! Electronics ConnectedDrive / My BMW app connection drops

Many G20 drivers report being repeatedly logged out of the My BMW app and ConnectedDrive. Software updates only fix the problem temporarily — a known systematic issue.

0–300 $
! Body Paint quality — susceptible to stone chips

G20 owners consistently report severely increased paint sensitivity to stone chips. Windscreens show more damage after 10,000–20,000 km than older models after 100,000 km.

50–800 $
! Suspension Front strut: clicking at low speeds

Knocking in the front suspension when rolling slowly over car park speed bumps. Steering rack identified as main cause — same weakness as the F80 predecessor.

200–1,500 $ from 10,000 km
! Brakes Standard brakes: chronic squealing

Standard brake system squeals chronically — BMW states this is normal for M vehicles. Switching to road pads (Dixcel Type M, ATE Ceramic) resolves the issue permanently.

200–500 $ from 5,000 km
! Interior Interior rattles — A-pillar and dashboard

The stiff sport suspension transmits vibrations into interior trim. Most common location: the small glovebox below the light switch strip and dashboard speakers.

0–400 $ from 10,000 km
i Brakes M Sport brakes squeal when stopping

The M Sport brake system tends to squeal when slowing to a stop, caused by stick-slip behaviour of the performance pads. BMW classifies this as normal.
