BMW 320i

N20B20 2.0L Turbo 184 hp Automatic Rear-wheel drive Wagon 2012–2015
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine N20B20 βœ– Stay Away! 11,530–34,500 $

BMW's first in-house four-cylinder turbo for the mid-size class. Timing chain and its guide rails are the main weakness β€” early replacement at any rattling noise.

Fun Factor? Decent

Four-Cylinder Turbo

Turbo four with the notorious timing chain issue β€” capable, but the anxiety never fully goes away.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Timing chain and oil pump chain

The best-known weak point of the N20. The timing chain and oil pump chain stretch; the chain tensioner fails. BMW offered an extended warranty (7 years/100,000 km) for pre-2015 models.

Symptoms: Rattling on start, engine warning light, sudden power loss, in extreme cases engine damage

2,200–4,000 $ from 50,000 km
!! Electric water pump failure

The electric water pump fails, risking overheating. A BMW-typical problem across all engines with electric coolant pumps since the N52 generation.

Symptoms: Overheating warning, temperature gauge rises quickly, coolant warning

400–900 $ from 90,000 km
!! Oil pump chain / oil pump sprocket defective

On the N20 the oil pump sprocket can wear prematurely or the oil pump chain can break. In documented cases (50,000 km) an internal drive component failure caused complete oil pump failure β€” catastrophic engine damage.

Symptoms: Whistling noise that increases with rpm; oil pressure warning; metallic rushing from the engine bay; unusual vibrations

1,500–4,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! VANOS camshaft adjuster wearing out

The N20 exhaust camshaft adjuster wears internally and causes intermittent fault codes (130308). Cleaning the solenoid valve alleviates the problem; replacing the adjuster resolves it permanently.

Symptoms: "Drive power not available" warning message; intermittent power loss; fault code 130308; rough running

200–1,500 $ from 180,000 km
!! Oil filter housing gasket leaking β€” oil in coolant

The oil filter housing rubber gaskets harden and become porous β€” coolant and oil can mix. Since coolant is routed through the housing, engine damage is possible if repair is delayed.

Symptoms: Oil film in the coolant reservoir, discoloured oil filler cap (milky), oil in the coolant expansion tank, oil streaks on the engine block below the filter.

150–500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Wastegate solenoid defective β€” boost pressure fault

The wastegate control solenoid develops adaptive learning faults and boost pressure regulation errors (fault code 123401). BMW-workshop repair requires cam cover removal and special tools β€” approximately 6 labour hours according to BMW.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, increased turbo rattle, fault codes 123401/1234131 (wastegate solenoid, learning-cycle error), no noticeable power loss in early stages.

300–2,500 $ from 70,000 km
!! Increased oil consumption β€” piston rings worn

The N20B20 can develop above-average oil consumption at higher mileages. Caused by piston ring wear and valve stem seals β€” particularly with extended oil change intervals.

Symptoms: Regular oil consumption above 0.5 L / 1,000 km, occasional blue smoke on cold start or after prolonged idling.

800–3,000 $ from 150,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Steering Electric power steering fails

The electromechanical power steering (EPS) fails intermittently or sticks. The rack has reportedly received numerous revisions without a complete solution being found. Only full replacement helps.

800–2,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Other N20 engine: timing chain stretches prematurely

The N20B20 engine (320i, 328i) is known for premature timing chain stretch. Chain can elongate from 30,000 km and cause total engine failure if it snaps. Repair cost 1,500–3,300 €.

1,500–3,300 $ from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Propshaft flange connection β€” recall, loss of drive

Recall 18V713000: the connection between the propshaft and flange can fail β€” sudden loss of drive possible. Approximately 2,661 vehicles affected.

0–0 $ from 40,000 km
!! Suspension Rear differential mounting bushing tears

BMW uses only a single rubber bushing to attach the differential to the subframe. Under torque fluctuations the bushing tears from around 60,000 km, especially with track use.

600–1,500 $ from 55,000 km
!! Suspension Adaptive M dampers failed β€” EDC fault message

EDC dampers leak or lose their adjustability. OEM replacement is very expensive. Bilstein Damptronic and Evolve dampers are cheaper alternatives with identical mode compatibility.

1,500–3,500 $ from 60,000 km
!! Body Carbon roof clear coat peeling

Factory clear coat on the CFRP carbon roof delaminates after 3–5 years of UV exposure. BMW regularly refuses warranty coverage. Particularly common in sunny climates.

800–1,500 $ from 60,000 km
!! Rust Rear subframe and underbody: premature corrosion

Rear subframe and brake line brackets corrode prematurely. Vehicles exposed to road salt can show significant underbody rust even under 100,000 km.

300–2,500 $ from 80,000 km
! Body Water ingress through seals

Water ingress through leaking rear door liners and blocked drain tubes is a known issue. Affects E90 and F30 generations equally. Early detection prevents secondary damage.

50–400 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Interior electronics faults

Various minor electronics issues: erratic wipers, fuel flap faults, display failures, automatically opening windows. Usually resolved by software updates.

0–300 $ from 50,000 km
! Body Boot water ingress through faulty seals

Water enters the boot through faulty tailgate or side window seals and blocked drain openings. Moisture damages electronics in the spare wheel well area.

50–400 $
! Other Valve cover gasket leaking β€” oil loss

The valve cover gasket goes brittle through heat cycling and loses its seal. An oil film on the exhaust manifold cover is a typical early sign. Fire risk if not addressed.

150–400 $
! Interior Alcantara steering wheel β€” trim stripe fades

The blue trim stripe on the Alcantara steering wheel fades from sunlight and hand contact as early as 15,000–20,000 km. No effective factory protection.

30–600 $ from 15,000 km
! Suspension Front strut: clicking on driver's side

Metallic clicking from front left over one-sided bumps. BMW changed the top mount design from 3 to 5 bolts in late 2014. Steering rack is the prime suspect on later production cars.

200–1,200 $ from 40,000 km
