BMW 335i
BMW's first production twin-turbo straight-six โ two small Garrett turbos instead of a single large twin-scroll as on the N55 successor. At idle a quiet metallic whisper; from 3,000 rpm the twin-turbo thrust arrives with a characteristic whistle the N55 doesn't have. No Valvetronic โ boost pressure instead of variable valve lift. The high-pressure pump (HPFP) is the N54 issue: if it fails while driving, the engine stops. BMW carried out several recalls but never fully resolved the problem. Piezo injectors must be brought to the latest revision. Wastegate rattle on cold start is cosmetic; turbo bearing damage from neglected oil supply is not. Oil changes every 7,500 km, never BMW Longlife. Let the engine idle for 30 seconds after hard use โ the turbos will thank you. Tuning: Stage 1 via software brings 400+ hp; well-built examples with 600+ hp are documented. Those who maintain the N54 get the most exciting BMW six-cylinder of its generation.

Engine Weaknesses 11
A notorious problem on the first BMW turbocharged straight-six. The high-pressure pump loses delivery pressure and the engine goes into limp mode. Build years 2006โ2010 most affected; several revisions made.
Symptoms: Hesitation, power loss, engine warning, engine stalls, extended cranking
Piezo injectors from early revisions (index 1โ9) are prone to failure. Misfires, rough running. Complete set per bank must be replaced.

Both turbochargers can suffer bearing damage from insufficient oil supply, blocked return lines, or hot shutdown after full-load driving. Metal swarf in the oil, risk of engine damage.
Symptoms: Blue smoke from the exhaust, oil in the intercooler and intake tract, whistling noise under load, significant power loss
A serial defect on N54 turbochargers. Wastegate flaps wear and rattle. BMW USA offered goodwill up to 82,000 miles / 8 years.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling during throttle changes, clattering at idle and under light load
The electric coolant pump fails, creating an overheating risk. A BMW-typical problem across all engines with electric water pumps.
Symptoms: Overheating warning, temperature rises quickly
Typical direct injection problem: intake valves are no longer flushed by fuel and coke up. Deposits cause power loss, rough idle, and increased fuel consumption.
Symptoms: Rough idle, stumbling throttle response under acceleration, occasional hesitation at part throttle, gradual power loss
The standard plastic charge pipe between the turbo and intercooler bursts under boost pressure. Failure accelerates with increased boost (Stage 1+).
Symptoms: Sudden power loss, loud hissing, engine warning light, engine runs without boost
Oil loss through a leaking cam cover gasket and defective crankcase ventilation (CCV). Oil consumption up to 1 L/1,000 km possible.
Symptoms: Oil smell, visible oil loss on the engine, high oil consumption, oil mist
The rubber gasket on the oil filter housing hardens over time and allows oil to seep โ in the worst case oil enters the coolant. A known N54 wear problem from around 130,000 km.
Symptoms: Oil drops under the engine block, oil film on the coolant reservoir cap, slight oil smell in the engine bay
The N54 burns through spark plugs and ignition coils faster than average โ the 60,000 km interval is often not reached. Oil in the spark plug wells accelerates failure.
Symptoms: Hesitation under load, misfire fault codes, rough idle when warm, increased fuel consumption
The VANOS solenoid valves block with oil sludge or fail electrically โ particularly with long oil change intervals. Cleaning is often sufficient; replacing both valves is recommended.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss in the lower rev range, metallic ticking on cold start, fault codes 2A82/2A87
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Faulty battery connectors on petrol models 2006โ2011 and diesels 2009โ2011 can cause complete electrical and engine failure. Recall was issued.
The electromechanical power steering (EPS) can fail sporadically without any fault codes โ often due to corroded connectors or an overheated EPS motor. KBA recall for production years 2007โ2012.
Rear suspension springs break frequently โ a well-known MOT failure point. Especially E91 Touring and older examples from around 100,000 km. Spring seats also rust.
Water ingress through leaking door seals, blocked sunroof drain tubes, or faulty antenna brackets. Battery compartment and footwell can both be affected. Multiple causes.
Control arm bushings and joints wear from around 100,000 km. Aluminium wishbones on the front axle are a typical wear item. Full arm from 200 โฌ, bushings from 10โ50 โฌ each.
The acoustic foam in the doors separates from the butyl seal and lets rainwater into the footwell. Damp floor mats and rotting carpet result.
