N52B25 2.5L Magnesium 190 hp Manual Sedan 2005–2012
– Be Careful
Engine N52B25 – Be Careful 2,650–9,250 $

Lightweight six-cylinder with magnesium crankcase and Valvetronic. Very smooth; oil filter housing gasket and VANOS solenoids are typical wear items.

Fun Factor? Decent

Alloy Six

Magnesium-alloy block, silky smooth β€” solid, but won't quicken the pulse.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Electric water pump defective

The N52 electric water pump is a known wear item. When it fails the engine overheats quickly. Recommended: preventive replacement when any abnormalities appear or from around 100,000 km.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature gauge rises quickly, coolant loss, audible pump malfunction, engine overheating.

400–900 $ from 100,000 km
!! Eccentric shaft sensor (Valvetronic) failure

The eccentric shaft sensor on the N52B25 Valvetronic system fails sporadically. Fuel consumption jumps sharply by 30–35%; the sensor costs approximately €315 new from BMW.

Symptoms: Sporadic eccentric shaft sensor fault code; fuel consumption jumps from ~10 to ~13.5 L/100 km; power loss; whistling noise under acceleration

300–700 $ from 80,000 km
!! Oil filter housing gasket leaking β€” oil in coolant

The seals in the oil-coolant heat exchanger inside the oil filter housing become porous and allow oil into the coolant. Affects N52, N53, and N54 equally. Always replace both seals at the same time.

Symptoms: Oil film on the coolant surface; oily-looking oil filler cap; no white smoke or visible fluid loss despite apparent head gasket symptoms

200–600 $ from 120,000 km
!! Magnesium cam cover cracks (hairline cracks)

The magnesium alloy cam cover develops hairline cracks from thermal cycling β€” preferentially at cylinders 5 and 6. Small cracks cause oil leaks resembling a gasket leak.

Symptoms: Oil leak at the rear of the engine, oil smell inside the cabin, crack often only visible after cleaning the engine bay.

250–600 $ from 120,000 km
!! VANOS solenoid valves worn

The VANOS camshaft adjustment solenoid valves become fouled or wear β€” fault codes P0011/P0015 (intake/exhaust camshaft), metallic grinding above 2,500 rpm under load.

Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss at low revs, fault code P0012 or P0015, grinding from the cam cover area under load.

100–500 $ from 100,000 km
! Cam cover gasket and eccentric shaft sensor leaking

The N52 magnesium cam cover has known sealing problems. Oil loss at the cam cover gasket, eccentric shaft sensor, and camshaft adjustment motor are common. Aluminium bolts must not be reused.

Symptoms: Oil loss at the cylinder head, oil smell, visible oil traces at the top of the engine, oil spots on the exhaust manifold.

200–600 $ from 120,000 km
! Crankcase ventilation (CCV) defective

The CCV is integrated into the cam cover and replaced together with it. A defective membrane valve causes crankcase overpressure and contaminates the throttle body and intake tract.

Symptoms: Rough idle, rpm fluctuations, oil mist on the throttle body, overpressure escapes when opening the oil filler cap on a running engine.

150–400 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Electronics Battery positive cable connection failure

Faulty battery connectors on petrol models 2006–2011 and diesels 2009–2011 can cause complete electrical and engine failure. Recall was issued.

150–400 $ from 80,000 km
!! Electronics Electric power steering fails intermittently

The electromechanical power steering (EPS) can fail sporadically without any fault codes β€” often due to corroded connectors or an overheated EPS motor. KBA recall for production years 2007–2012.

300–2,500 $
!! Suspension Rear suspension springs break

Rear suspension springs break frequently β€” a well-known MOT failure point. Especially E91 Touring and older examples from around 100,000 km. Spring seats also rust.

300–600 $ from 100,000 km
!! Body Water ingress β€” boot / interior

Water ingress through leaking door seals, blocked sunroof drain tubes, or faulty antenna brackets. Battery compartment and footwell can both be affected. Multiple causes.

50–500 $ from 80,000 km
! Suspension Control arm rubber bushings worn

Control arm bushings and joints wear from around 100,000 km. Aluminium wishbones on the front axle are a typical wear item. Full arm from 200 €, bushings from 10–50 € each.

200–700 $ from 100,000 km
! Body Water ingress into footwell through door membrane

The acoustic foam in the doors separates from the butyl seal and lets rainwater into the footwell. Damp floor mats and rotting carpet result.

50–250 $
