BMW 323Ci
Revised M52 with double VANOS and improved emissions. Same fundamental reliability; VANOS seals are wear items.
Open VANOS six
Double-VANOS brings more character — solid engine, watch the VANOS seal — open-top driving lifts the mood.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The DISA variable intake valve breaks at the shaft base or the membrane tears. Fragments can be sucked into the engine and cause catastrophic damage.
Symptoms: Power loss in the lower rev range, rattling or clattering from the intake area, in the worst case engine damage from ingested fragments.
The O-rings in the double-VANOS system harden and lose their sealing effect. Oil pressure drops and variable valve timing becomes imprecise.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss especially in the lower rev range, occasional rattling on cold start.
The M52TU features double-VANOS. The piston sealing rings age and harden, causing oil pressure to drop. Affects all M52TU engines of all production years. Inexpensive to repair with a Beisan seal kit.
Symptoms: Power loss below 3,000 rpm, fluctuating idle after declutching, sudden pick-up above 3,000 rpm
The M52TU crankcase ventilation system consists of a regulating valve and several hoses that become brittle and crack with age. The regulating valve can freeze. Results: increased oil consumption and air leaks.
Symptoms: Increased oil consumption, smoke after cold start, whistling sound when opening the oil filler cap, rough idle
The profile end seal on the oil filter housing hardens and starts to leak. On the M52TU the housing is awkwardly positioned and the alternator must be removed. Typically occurs from around 120,000–180,000 km.
Symptoms: Oil loss in the area below the intake tract, oil smell after driving, oil film on the engine block
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The plastic coolant expansion tank becomes brittle through thermal cycling and cracks or bursts — on almost every E46. A typical 3–4 cm crack appears along the housing edges. Risk of engine damage through overheating.
Rubber barrel bearings in the rear axle wear regularly. Repair requires full axle disassembly and special tools; Lemförder bearings recommended. Cost 400–630 € including wheel alignment.
The hydraulic bushings on the front control arms typically wear from 55,000 km. Wheel alignment is mandatory after replacement. Total cost 300–650 € depending on workshop.
The wheel arch liner wears through the primer at the inner wing seam. Rust grows from the inside and is only noticed once visible blisters appear. Welding repair is unavoidable.
The rubber O-rings in the VANOS unit become porous after around 100,000–165,000 km. The pistons then have excessive play, disrupting oil flow and camshaft timing.
The plastic sliders in the window regulator mechanism break almost universally. BMW doesn't supply sliders individually — only complete mechanisms. Cheap fix: aftermarket replacement sliders from third-party suppliers for a few euros.
Track rod ends wear as the joint grease dries out. Inexpensive replacement at around 100 € labour plus parts; always replace both sides and realign afterwards.
