✖ Stay Away!
Engine M54B22 ✖ Stay Away! 1,810–4,800 $

Successor to the M52 with aluminium crankcase and double VANOS. Very reliable; typical weaknesses are cooling system components and the crankcase ventilation.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Open entry-level six

Pleasant R6, but too little power for the weight — watch the DISA valve — open-top driving lifts the mood.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! DISA flap valve defective

The DISA flap in the M54B22 intake manifold can break its shaft. If the flap breaks off and enters the engine, catastrophic damage is likely. The membrane wears regularly. Preventive replacement from 120,000 km is advisable.

Symptoms: Hesitation under acceleration, power loss, whistling noise after engine shutdown, rough idle

100–300 $ from 120,000 km
!! DISA valve defective

The DISA variable intake valve breaks at the shaft base or the membrane tears. Fragments can be sucked into the engine and cause catastrophic damage.

Symptoms: Power loss in the lower rev range, rattling or clattering from the intake area, in the worst case engine damage from ingested fragments.

130–400 $ from 120,000 km
!! Crankcase ventilation / air leak

The crankcase ventilation hoses and the accordion boot to the idle control valve become brittle and crack. Unmetered air bypasses the MAF sensor and overwhelms mixture control. Typical on vehicles over 10–15 years old.

Symptoms: Rough idle, rich/lean mixture deviation, misfires, poor cold-start drivability, engine warning light

80–300 $ from 140,000 km
!! Camshaft sensor failure

Camshaft position sensors (intake and exhaust) on the M54B22 fail with increasing age. Cheap aftermarket parts are frequently poor quality. Use only genuine BMW, Vemo, or Hella sensors.

Symptoms: Power loss of approximately 50 hp, hesitation around 4,000 rpm, poor hot-start behaviour, engine warning light

100–300 $ from 130,000 km
! Oil filter housing gasket leaking

The rectangular gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine block fails regularly. BMW part number 11421719855 — aftermarket gaskets tend to have a shorter service life.

Symptoms: Oil seeping below the oil filter, oil smell when engine is hot.

80–250 $ from 130,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Cooling Coolant expansion tank bursts

The plastic coolant expansion tank becomes brittle through thermal cycling and cracks or bursts — on almost every E46. A typical 3–4 cm crack appears along the housing edges. Risk of engine damage through overheating.

100–300 $ from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Rear axle barrel bearings worn

Rubber barrel bearings in the rear axle wear regularly. Repair requires full axle disassembly and special tools; Lemförder bearings recommended. Cost 400–630 € including wheel alignment.

400–650 $
!! Suspension Front control arm hydraulic bushings failed

The hydraulic bushings on the front control arms typically wear from 55,000 km. Wheel alignment is mandatory after replacement. Total cost 300–650 € depending on workshop.

300–650 $ from 60,000 km
!! Rust Rear wheel arch rust

The wheel arch liner wears through the primer at the inner wing seam. Rust grows from the inside and is only noticed once visible blisters appear. Welding repair is unavoidable.

250–800 $
!! Other VANOS seals worn

The rubber O-rings in the VANOS unit become porous after around 100,000–165,000 km. The pistons then have excessive play, disrupting oil flow and camshaft timing.

150–400 $ from 130,000 km
! Electronics Plastic window regulator sliders break

The plastic sliders in the window regulator mechanism break almost universally. BMW doesn't supply sliders individually — only complete mechanisms. Cheap fix: aftermarket replacement sliders from third-party suppliers for a few euros.

20–150 $
! Steering Track rod ends wear

Track rod ends wear as the joint grease dries out. Inexpensive replacement at around 100 € labour plus parts; always replace both sides and realign afterwards.
