The 2 Series Coupé G42 is BMW's current compact coupé and successor to the popular F22. On sale since 2021, the G42 retains rear-wheel drive — an important signal to enthusiasts. The design language polarizes with the large kidney grille, but underneath sits a serious driver's car.
The engine range spans from the 218i (B48, 115 kW) to the M2 CS with its S58 producing 390 kW. The M240i xDrive with B58 (275 kW) is the hidden star: inline-six refinement with all-wheel-drive traction and enough power for every situation. Diesel only offers the 220d with B47.
As a young model, vehicle weaknesses are still limited: software issues with iDrive 8, brake disc corrosion for low-mileage use, and occasional interior rattles. Build quality is a step up from the predecessor, with a firmer suspension setup.
The G42 is BMW's last pure rear-wheel-drive two-door coupé — crowned by the M2. Used prices are still high, but depreciation is setting in. Long-term thinkers should secure an M240i or M2 as a potential classic. The base four-cylinders are solid daily drivers without the enthusiast premium.
