Audi TTS
EA888 Gen 3 with 310 PS (228 kW) / 285 PS (210 kW) in the TTS and RS3. High-performance TFSI with individual throttle body and revised cooling. Very sporty and rev-happy, but demanding in terms of servicing and fuel quality.
230 hp in the sports coupé — precise and lively
In the TT body the 230 hp engine develops special effect: the light coupé is agile and direct, the sensitive steering transmits road information precisely. A true driver's sports car that also works in everyday life.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Simplex timing chain stretches from ~80,000–100,000 km. The TT 8S is often driven hard, which increases chain stress. Cold-start rattling is the first sign.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, P0016/P0017 fault codes, metallic chain noise
Variable oil pump does not adequately supply camshaft phasers and chain tensioners in city driving/at idle. Known weakness of all EA888 Gen3. Rattling after cold start is the first warning sign.
Symptoms: Rattling from the valvetrain after cold start, oil pressure warning at idle, camshaft phaser fault codes
The electronic wastegate actuator of the IHI IS20 absorbs moisture and fails. Rattling from linkage play, uncontrolled boost pressure. The tight packaging of the TT 8S makes repair slightly more difficult.
Symptoms: Rattling between 1,800–2,900 rpm, inconsistent boost pressure, P0299 fault code
Plastic water pump becomes brittle and fails. Impeller detaches from shaft. Recommended preventive action: replacement at 80,000 km with metal impeller variant.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, poor heater output
Crankcase ventilation membrane valve (06H 103 495 AK) tears frequently on all EA888 Gen3. Under boost pressure an intake leak causes misfires and power loss.
Symptoms: Whistling noise during acceleration, P2279, rough idle
Direct injection without port injection coats intake valves. The TT 8S is often driven enthusiastically: motorway driving helps slightly, short urban trips accelerate coking.
Symptoms: Power loss, misfires on cold start, P2015 fault code
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
The optional Magnetic Ride chassis on the TTS 8S produces intrusive rattling noises that were never resolved on the 8S either. Known to the manufacturer but without a permanent solution.
The 6-speed S-tronic in the TTS 8S shifts erratically and untidily. Known criticism: no 7th gear. Shift problems can indicate mechatronic or clutch wear.
The standard brakes on the TTS 8S are not designed for intensive track use. Fade occurs after several consecutive hard braking events. Not recommended for frequent circuit driving.
The digital Virtual Cockpit can show software errors that are resolved by a restart. Occasional display glitches or screen freezes are known.
Expensive leather seats develop intrusive creaking noises from the seat frame. Fixing it requires a new seat frame, which is expensive and only worthwhile under warranty.
