Audi TTS
Stronger EA888 Gen1 variant with 155 kW. More commonly found in TTS. Identical weaknesses to CCZA, but higher thermal stress from the extra power.
Agile lightweight — direct and fun
211 hp 2.0L in a compact chassis — nimble handling, solid punch. Particularly entertaining in the TT.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Gen1/Gen2 EA888 has oil scraper rings that are too thin (friction optimization), which coke up from 40,000–70,000 km. Over 1 liter per 1,000 km possible. Fix: new pistons with wider steel lamella rings.
Symptoms: Noticeably dropping oil level between oil changes, blue exhaust fumes, oil smell after driving
The Gen1/Gen2 EA888 chain tensioner is undersized and can break. Chain can skip, causing inevitable engine damage. Documented cases from 94,000 km.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, in worst case engine stumbling or sudden failure without warning
Plastic water pump on the EA888 cracks or develops leaks. Removal takes approx. 3 hours as the entire intake system must be dismantled.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, temperature rise, heater output decreases, occasional squealing noise
IHI turbocharger wastegate linkage develops play through thermal wear. Metallic rattling between 2,000–3,000 rpm. Official TPI fix: clip 06J145220A.
Symptoms: Tinny rattling or clattering between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm when accelerating
Direct injection without port injection means no fuel washes the intake valves — oil mist bakes onto the back of the valves as a hard carbon layer.
Symptoms: Cold start problems, stumbling under partial load, power loss, poor throttle response
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
A faulty software version causes shift problems in the 6-speed S-tronic. Hard downshifts in S mode and a flashing gear selector display are typical. A software update from the dealer is required.
Knocking top mounts are a typical problem on the TTS 8J at higher mileages. Steering wheel vibrates at around 140 km/h even with original wheels.
Electric window regulators fail with age and need complete replacement. Both doors of the TTS 8J are affected.
Older TTS 8J show increasing corrosion on the underbody. The front spoiler mechanism and rear spoiler mechanism can also corrode and jam.
Leather seats develop intrusive creaking noises over time. A new seat frame can help but is only economically worthwhile under warranty.
