Audi TT Sport
EA113 1.8T Sport Edition with 240 PS β rare top version of the 1.8T in the TT 8N. Built only in 2005β2006 as a limited run.
Agile Lightweight β Direct and Fun
239 hp 1.8L in a compact chassis β nimble handling, good punch. Precise gearshift comes as standard. Especially fun in the TT.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The 1.8T BFV develops oil sludge with extended oil-change intervals. The sludge blocks the oil pump strainer, leading to oil pressure loss and engine damage. The factory Longlife recommendation is too long.
Symptoms: Sporadic oil pressure warning, metallic ticking, oil pressure loss under load
The 1.8T BFV is sensitive to Longlife oil change intervals. Coked oil blocks the oil pump strainer and reduces lubrication. The sump should be checked before purchase.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning, greasy deposits inside the oil cap, noticeable residue on oil change
The K03 turbocharger on the BFV wears prematurely when lubrication is inadequate. Too short a cool-down phase after full load accelerates bearing wear from heat soak after switch-off.
Symptoms: Whistling from the engine bay under load, blue smoke at idle, oil loss at the turbo
The camshaft adjuster on the BFV engine cokes with overly long oil change intervals. Fault codes in the ECU indicate delayed response or failure of the adjuster, which then needs replacing.
Symptoms: Fault codes P0011/P0012 (camshaft timing), rattling on cold start, slight power loss
The 1.8T turbocharger needs adequate cool-down time after high-load operation. Shutting off too quickly after full-throttle driving damages the plain bearings due to lack of oil cooling. Oil temperatures above 130Β°C without cool-down are critical.
Symptoms: Turbo whine, blue smoke from exhaust, power drop at higher boost pressures
Pencil coils on the 1.8T BFV fail at high mileage. The pattern is similar to the AUM engine. When one coil fails, all four are often due as they are at the same wear state.
Symptoms: Jerking and misfires on acceleration, misfire fault codes in the ECU, engine warning light
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The lower rear wishbone bearing can seize through corrosion on quattro models. In 15 documented cases the wishbone broke and the rear wheel collapsed.
Speedo display, fuel and coolant temperature gauges, and pixel failures in the instrument cluster display are well-known weak points. A full replacement is often the only solution.
On quattro models the Haldex coupling can fail or the control unit can become faulty. Four-wheel drive function is lost; the Haldex fluid must be changed regularly.
On the TT Roadster, the automatic hood mechanism frequently fails due to faulty hydraulic cylinders or worn seals. Window synchronisation and hood rubbers also age badly.
The glass rear window separates from the hood fabric. Additionally, the inner rain gutters can detach, leading to water pooling and damage to control units in the boot.
The two hydraulic cylinders in the B-pillar develop oil leaks through worn seals after a few years. Overhaul of both cylinders costs around β¬490 at a specialist.
Practically every TT 8N shows corrosion on the roof strips and on the tailgate around the number plate lights. Water gets in through the rear spoiler.
