Petrol replaces diesel β faster, but diesel fans are mourning
354 hp TFSI instead of BiTurbo TDI. Quicker in a sprint, but the brutal diesel torque is gone. Consumption notably higher, range shorter, character more generic. Competitive against Macan S and X3 M40i on paper, but the SQ5 community misses the diesel.

The V6 3.0 TDI has four timing chains that wear prematurely with poor maintenance. Rattling on cold start is the typical warning. Complete chain drive replacement costs approx. β¬3,000.

On EA897 EVO engines with certain serial numbers (CRT 000001β073951), camshafts can break due to material defects. A break inevitably causes severe engine damage.
Symptoms: Sudden loss of power, rough running, engine stall without prior warning
Faulty plastic coolant control valves cause coolant loss. The plastic welded joint becomes porous and leaks. Repair costs are around β¬1,200β1,400.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, rising temperature, coolant loss without visible external leak
The AdBlue dosing valve and AdBlue tank are prone to failure. Warning messages in the instrument cluster often appear early. Replacement costs over β¬1,000, sometimes covered by goodwill.

Soot deposits on injectors cause scattered symptoms and rough running. Particularly common with short-trip use. Cleaning or replacement can cost several hundred euros.

The NOx sensor upstream or downstream of the SCR catalyst fails prematurely, triggering the engine warning light. Often repaired under goodwill; outside warranty approx. β¬300β600 replacement.

KBA recall: stress corrosion cracking can cause elevated play between the control arm and wheel carrier. Affects build years 2019β2021. Free replacement at dealer.
Recall for Q5 FY (production July 2018 to March 2019): faulty brake master cylinders increase stopping distance. Free replacement programme through Audi.
Salt water penetrates the rear control arm bushings. Stress corrosion can cause the bushings to come loose, resulting in increased steering play and changed handling dynamics.
Fuel rail seals can leak, with fuel escape and fire risk. Affects early FY model years 2017β2018. Recall code 24DP.
Moisture enters through cracks in the inverter housing of the belt-driven starter-generator β short circuit, overheating, fire risk. Recall code 27H2, approximately 530,000 vehicles worldwide.
A manufacturing defect in the front seat adjustment mechanism can impair the restraint function in a collision. Approximately 2,918 Q5/SQ5 vehicles affected worldwide.
The Haldex rear differential suffers from oil contamination by clutch debris when maintenance is neglected. A differential oil change clears the symptoms. Neglect risks differential damage.
Brake callipers seize especially after prolonged standing. Rear axle callipers are most affected. MOT reports list brake defects as a frequent fault.
Pads and discs wear quickly on the SQ5 due to vehicle weight and sport-biased setup. Rear pads are often worn from 40,000 km, fronts by 60,000 km. City driving accelerates the process noticeably.
The upper control arms of the front axle show bushing and joint wear at higher mileages. Typical from 80,000β120,000 km, especially with spirited driving or poor road surfaces.
Air suspension rubber bellows become brittle and porous. Gradual pressure loss causes the car to sink, mainly at the front. The compressor then runs continuously and overheats.

Water collects in the front body sill sections and causes internal corrosion. Recall action: remove rust, prime, repaint, retrofit plastic covers.
The A/C compressor can fail at higher mileages. Common causes are refrigerant loss through micro-leaks in the condenser (vulnerable to stone chips) or mechanical wear.
