Audi S7

DCTB 2.9L TFSI V6 BiTurbo 450 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2019–2024
– Be Careful
Engine DCTB – Be Careful 9,000–29,700 €

EA839 BiTurbo V6 with 331 kW for S6/S7 C8. Switch from V8 to V6 compared to the predecessor, but with 48V mild hybrid and electric compressor, performance is nearly identical.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

V6 S7 β€” same V8-shaped hole, now in a Sportback

Same V6+48V controversy as the S6 C8, wrapped in a Sportback body. The prettier shell can't mask the V8 void. Love the silhouette but need the V8 sound: buy a used C7, not a new C8.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Rocker Arm Roller Bearing Failure β€” Engine Damage

Small roller bearings in the rocker arms can detach and fall into the oil pan. Affects 2.9 BiTurbo engines from early production (up to approx. 2019, code GP0). Revised rocker arms (GP1) introduced from 2017.

Symptoms: Knocking noises from cylinder head, engine roughness, misfires, metal particles in the oil

2,500–8,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Upper Chain Tensioners Defective β€” Rattling

The upper timing chain tensioners of the 2.9 TFSI tend to weaken. Typical rattling on cold start that disappears after warm-up. Audi revised the tensioners; goodwill repair often possible.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (2,000–3,000 rpm), disappears after warm-up

800–3,000 € from 80,000 km
!! High-Pressure Pump Defective

The DCTB 2.5 TFSI Evo (RS3 8Y, 400 hp) shows early high-pressure pump failure on some examples. Power loss and misfires are typical symptoms.

Symptoms: Power loss under high load, rough running, fault code fuel pressure control, increased fuel consumption.

800–2,500 € from 80,000 km
! Carbon Deposits on Intake Valves

Direct injection without port injection leads to carbon deposits on intake valves. Power loss and increased consumption from around 80,000 km. Walnut blasting required.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, increased consumption, poor cold-start response

600–1,500 € from 80,000 km
! Wastegate Linkage Worn β€” Rattling

BiTurbo wastegate linkage rods can wear and produce metallic rattling on overrun. Known on the EA839 BiTurbo. Repair often only possible by replacing the turbocharger.

Symptoms: Metallic clattering when lifting off throttle, especially during spirited and motorway driving

1,500–5,000 € from 70,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 4

!! Electronics Air suspension: ride height sensor fault

On the S7 4K, defective ride height sensors in the air suspension are reported, causing system fault messages. Usually individual sensors that need replacing.

200–1,200 € from 60,000 km
!! Electronics 48V mild-hybrid system fault

The 48V mild-hybrid system with belt-driven starter-generator is a potential weak point in the S7 4K. Audi granted a 7-year extended warranty on the BSG, which is telling.

1,500–4,000 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics MMI and driver assistance system faults

S7 4K drivers report sporadic fault messages from driver assistance systems, gearbox faults and drivetrain warnings, particularly at speeds above 180 km/h. Software updates resolve many issues.

200–2,000 €
! Brakes High-performance brakes: expensive to maintain

The S7 4K's braking system is sized for 450 hp and dimensioned accordingly. Front brake disc and pad replacement is expensive.

900–2,500 € from 40,000 km
