3.0-litre TDI V6 with 257 hp in the mild hybrid variant (C8). Robust diesel from the EA897 Evo series with 48-volt belt starter generator. Watch for camshaft material defect on early batches; check injector sealing regularly as fuel entry into the oil is a known issue.
V6 replaces V8 — quick, efficient, nobody asked for it
They killed the V8 and replaced it with a V6 and a 48V system. Quick? Yes. Efficient? Yes. Nobody asked for this. The C7 with its twin-turbo V8 is climbing in value while C8s sit at dealers. Three of four C8 buyers on Audizine traded for an S8 — the only way left to get a V8 in the S-range.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Like all EA897 variants, the DTPA has four timing chains that wear prematurely with poor maintenance. Timing chain repair costs several thousand euros.
Symptoms: Rattling and clattering on cold start, timing chain warning in instrument cluster
EA897 EVO 257-hp variants are also affected by camshaft material defects. Audi replaces as goodwill with full service history, but recurrence after replacement has been documented.
Symptoms: Tapping, knocking engine noises of unusual intensity, power drop
Four timing chains in the EA897 (facelift version 2016+): one per cylinder bank, one connecting chain, one for the oil pump. Full replacement takes 15–20 hours, costs approx. €3,000.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine warning light (camshaft sensor fault)
At high mileage, injectors can become coked, causing rough running and increased consumption. Cleaning or replacement required sooner with predominantly short trips.

The 3.0 TDI V6 turbocharger wears with inadequate lubrication or high stress. Typical symptoms are power loss and blue smoke from the exhaust.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling from turbo, blue smoke from exhaust, increased oil consumption
Early A6 C8 50 TDI units showed a glaring hesitation on pull-away caused by a faulty engine management software. Audi corrected the problem free of charge via software update.
Symptoms: Hesitant response on pull-away, inharmonious surge from standstill
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
On vehicles from model year 2018 the panoramic roof can detach due to adhesive bond failure. Audi issued a recall; confirm completion before purchase.
The 48V belt-driven starter-generator (BSG) is a known weak point of the C8. When it fails the entire 48V electrical system goes offline. Audi granted an extended warranty of 7 years on the component.
On some C8 models moisture enters through a leaking wheel arch and causes a musty smell inside the vehicle as well as possible corrosion on electrical components.
On the S6 C8 the adaptive cruise control (ACC) and MMI infotainment system drop out sporadically. The automatic emergency brake triggers too early. Primarily affects 2018–2021 models.
The S6 C8 with 450 hp and a 2,000 kg kerb weight places heavy demands on the braking system. Spirited use leads to frequent brake disc replacement, especially on the front axle.
