Audi S3

CJXG 2.0L TFSI 310 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2013–2016
– Be Careful
Engine CJXG – Be Careful 5,760–21,500 €

High-performance EA888 Gen3 with 228 kW for S3/TTS. Reinforced bottom end and larger turbocharger. Very capable; turbo and clutch under heavier stress with spirited use.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Golf R in Audi clothing — paying for comfort, not speed

Same EA888, same Haldex — which feels like FWD in normal driving. The premium buys a nicer interior and quieter exhaust, not driving dynamics. Anyone chasing performance buys the Golf R and puts the savings into a Stage 1 tune. Anyone wanting comfort with speed on tap: right choice.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! Timing chain stretched — simplex chain

The CJXG simplex timing chain stretches measurably from ~80,000–100,000 km. Spirited driving and higher engine load accelerate wear. Cold-start rattling is a clear early warning. When the tensioner shows more than 7 teeth — it's time for a replacement.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (up to 10 seconds), metallic clattering, P0016 fault codes

800–1,600 € from 90,000 km
!! Two-stage oil pump — pressure drop at low rpm

Variable oil pump delivers insufficient oil pressure at idle and low rpm. Camshaft phasers and chain tensioners are not adequately supplied. Particularly critical in city traffic; rattling from the valvetrain is the first warning sign.

Symptoms: Rattling/knocking after cold start, camshaft phaser fault codes, oil pressure warning at idle

400–1,200 € from 80,000 km
!! HPFP cam follower worn

High-pressure pump cam follower wears and produces metal debris in the fuel system. The higher-output variant (230 hp) runs the pump under greater load. Regular visual inspection via the service port is required.

Symptoms: Power loss, starting problems, P0087 fuel pressure fault, knocking pump noise

150–4,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption — first-revision piston rings

Early CJXG engines (before production week 35/2015) use overly thin oil scraper rings that coke up. At the higher output (230 hp) consumption is even more pronounced than on the CJSA. Revised three-piece steel lamella rings from week 35/2015 are far less affected.

Symptoms: Oil level drops without leaks, bluish smoke under load or overrun, oily spark plugs

2,500–5,000 € from 60,000 km
!! IHI IS20 wastegate actuator failure

The electronic wastegate actuator of the IHI IS20 turbocharger absorbs moisture and fails. Rattling at 1,800–2,900 rpm from linkage play, uncontrolled boost pressure. Individual actuator repair possible (€220); dealers often replace the complete turbo.

Symptoms: Rattling at mid-range rpm, inconsistent boost pressure, P0299 fault code, power loss

250–2,200 € from 100,000 km
!! Water pump plastic housing fails

The original water pump's plastic housing and impeller become brittle and fail. The impeller can detach from the shaft, causing complete pump failure. Higher thermal load on the 230 hp variant. Preventive replacement at 80,000 km recommended.

Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, coolant smell, heater output weakens

250–500 € from 100,000 km
! PCV membrane valve torn

The crankcase ventilation membrane valve (06H 103 495 AK) tears from age and pressure spikes. Oil mist enters the intake tract and the engine runs with an intake leak. Inexpensive repair, but a recurring problem on all EA888 Gen3.

Symptoms: Intake hissing noise, rough idle, P2279 intake leak code, power loss

80–200 € from 70,000 km
! Intake valve coking (direct injection)

Direct injection without port injection causes intake valve coking. EGR gases and PCV oil mist accelerate deposit build-up. Typically noticeable from 50,000–80,000 km. Walnut blasting (BEDI) required.

Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, misfires on cold start, P2015 tumble flap fault

300–600 € from 60,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Suspension Haldex Gen5 pre-charge pump blocked

The Gen 5 Haldex pre-charge pump screen blocks with oil sludge and prevents pressure build-up. The all-wheel drive fails gradually. This was a particularly frequent weak point until the facelift.

80–800 € from 60,000 km
! Brakes Above-average brake disc wear

The sportier driving style of S3 owners causes discs and pads to wear significantly faster than in the A3. Front brake discs on the S3 are often due after 40,000–60,000 km.

400–900 € from 50,000 km
! Suspension Wheel bearings wear under AWD load

Wheel bearing defects on the S3 8V manifest as characteristic humming in corners. The combination of all-wheel drive and spirited driving accelerates wear versus front-wheel-drive variants.

200–500 € from 80,000 km
! Gearbox S tronic jerks at low speed

The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is prone to jerky behaviour at low speeds, in stop-and-go traffic and when manoeuvring. Regular gearbox oil changes every 60,000 km are essential.

150–2,500 € from 60,000 km
! Electronics MMI system crashes and freezes

The MMI infotainment system of the S3 8V (especially pre-facelift 2016) is prone to crashes and freezing. Software updates resolved many issues, but older control modules can remain persistently problematic.

200–1,500 €
