Audi RS3
Transitional engine between the CEPA and DAZA: first 2.5 TFSI with 367 PS in the RS3 8V pre-facelift, still with a cast-iron block like the CEPA. Technically a bored-out CEPA with a larger turbo and optimised charge air routing β the aluminium DAZA only arrived in 2017 with the facelift. Acoustically almost indistinguishable from the CEPA: the same five-cylinder rhythm. Without OPF the CZGB sounds unfiltered and raw β many RS3 buyers specifically seek the pre-facelift for its better sound compared to the later DNWA with OPF. All known five-cylinder weaknesses apply: intake valve carbon build-up, HPFP leaks, water pump housing.
Five-cylinder without GPF β last chance for uncensored sound
367 hp without particulate filter β above 4,000 rpm the CZGB sounds like nothing else on sale. The 8V generation refines the 8P: better insulated, faster, more civilized. But the GPF-free sound is the argument. Against A45 AMG and M2, the more emotional purchase.
Engine Weaknesses 11
The plastic water pump housing cracks from thermal cycling. Coolant escapes on the driver's side. Known issue with TPI documentation.
Symptoms: Coolant puddle on driver's side after parking, dropping coolant level, coolant smell after the drive.
Bearing damage from inadequate oil supply (short trips, cold-start full throttle). Consequential damage: piston melt-down from exhaust back-pressure, intercooler contamination with oil mist.
Symptoms: Whistling noise under higher load, black exhaust smoke, heavy oil consumption, engine throttling (limp mode).
The high-pressure pump sits on the camshaft cover. When the seal fails, fuel enters the engine oil β oil level rises, lubricating properties decrease, bearing damage is likely.
Symptoms: Strong fuel smell at the oil filler cap, rising oil level on dipstick despite no top-up, fuel smell in the cabin.
The DQ500 mechatronics unit is the most common failure point. The standard clutch slips above ~650 Nm. Gearbox oil change from 60,000 km recommended. Early DQ500 units had failure-prone three-piece synchro rings.
Symptoms: Juddering on take-off or 2β3 gear change, jolt during brisk acceleration, clutch slip when cold. In extreme cases gearbox failure.
Haldex Gen 5 has only a strainer instead of a filter; clutch debris clogs the strainer. Pump blockage causes complete AWD failure. Not in the maintenance schedule; preventive cleaning every 40,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: AWD warning light, ESP fault message, noticeable traction loss at the rear axle in wet conditions or fast cornering.
Only direct injection without port injection: oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation bakes onto the valve faces. Visible from 50,000 km. DAZA/DNWA/DNWC with dual injection not affected.
Symptoms: Rough idle, slight power loss on cold start, slightly increased consumption. Only visible via borescope.
Valve stem seals wear prematurely on the CZGB (production years 2015β2016). Oil enters the combustion chamber at idle. Factory specification of 0.5 L/1,000 km is quoted as the limit.
Symptoms: Blue-white smoke from exhaust on cold start (first 1β2 min), disappears at operating temperature. Oil level drops without external leaks.
The PCV outlet sits next to the diverter valve. When the diverter valve opens, oil mist is drawn along and condenses in the air filter housing. Amplifies intake valve coking on CEPA/CZGB.
Symptoms: Oil residue in the air filter housing and on the air filter, occasional oil mist from the intake tract at full throttle.
The solenoid valve between the large and small cooling circuits sticks slightly open β engine temperature fluctuates between 70β90Β°C. No fault code stored because the valve is electrically intact.
Symptoms: Engine temperature does not stabilise at 90Β°C, fluctuates, long warm-up even in summer. No fault code.
Change spark plugs in the five-cylinder every 20,000β30,000 km (not longlife!). Wrong plugs cause ignition coil failures. The connector plastic breaks when pulled off carelessly.
Symptoms: Misfires at low temperatures, rough idle, slight power loss, P0300βP0305 fault codes.
Design-inherent rattle from a wastegate valve with play β Audi TPI 2051734/3 classifies it as state of the art. Disappears in sport mode through altered boost pressure management.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling at cold-start idle, especially at low temperatures. Disappears after reaching operating temperature or in sport mode.
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
Bearing failure in the angle gear due to pitting and poor OEM oil. Audi acknowledged the issue in TPI 2054707. Bearings not available separately β full unit replacement required.
Gen 5 Haldex is sensitive to contaminated oil. The pre-charge pump screen blocks up, clutch plates wear. Audi specifies no change interval β recommendation: every 2β3 years.
Magnetorheological dampers wear gradually. Conventional test rigs unsuitable as the electronics actively counteract. Replacement only in pairs.
Factory rubber elements in rear dampers and top mounts are porous. Knocking noises documented as early as 3,000β15,000 km. Multiple warranty replacements on record.
Standard brake pads wear extremely quickly under spirited use. Reports of wear starting at 17,000β19,000 km.
The Gen 5 Haldex pre-charge pump screen blocks with oil sludge and prevents pressure build-up. The all-wheel drive fails gradually. This was a particularly frequent weak point until the facelift.
Exhaust flaps on the sport exhaust corrode at their pivot points and seize. Lubrication helps temporarily, as temperatures vaporise everything.
The Alcantara steering wheel shows delamination, bubbling and discolouration at the transitions to leather even at low mileage. Audi rejected goodwill claims on multiple occasions.
The sportier driving style of S3 owners causes discs and pads to wear significantly faster than in the A3. Front brake discs on the S3 are often due after 40,000β60,000 km.
Wheel bearing defects on the S3 8V manifest as characteristic humming in corners. The combination of all-wheel drive and spirited driving accelerates wear versus front-wheel-drive variants.
The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is prone to jerky behaviour at low speeds, in stop-and-go traffic and when manoeuvring. Regular gearbox oil changes every 60,000 km are essential.
The MMI infotainment system of the S3 8V (especially pre-facelift 2016) is prone to crashes and freezing. Software updates resolved many issues, but older control modules can remain persistently problematic.
