Audi SQ8

DCU 4.0L TFSI V8 BiTurbo 507 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2020–2024
– Be Careful
Engine DCU – Be Careful 9,450–39,200 €

EA825 4.0 TFSI V8 Biturbo with 507 PS in the SQ7/SQ8. Lamborghini Urus-related engine with enormous power and surprisingly refined delivery.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

Urus platform, half the price — but half the presence too

Same MLB evo platform as the Lamborghini Urus, but with Audi restraint. Fast enough to win SUV drag races nobody runs, too big for real cornering joy. For anyone wanting the Urus platform without the price: here. For anyone wanting driving fun: wrong segment.

Engine Weaknesses 10

!! Cylinder Bore Cracks (Recall)

Audi recall 10G9: cracks can form on the surface of cylinder bores, leading to engine damage, stalling or oil leaks. Audi replaces affected engines free of charge.

Symptoms: Sudden stall, oil leakage, engine warning light, in worst case engine failure during driving

0–0 €
!! Turbocharger Lubrication Problems

High-performance 4.0 TFSI turbochargers need a constant oil supply. Insufficient lubrication or degraded oil leads to overheating and turbocharger damage, especially after high-load driving.

Symptoms: Whistling, power loss, blue smoke, increased oil consumption through turbo seals

3,000–8,000 € from 120,000 km
!! 48V Belt Starter Generator Failure

The 48V BSG of the mild hybrid system fails prematurely on some vehicles, producing a flood of warning lights. Steering and brake boost can be impaired.

Symptoms: Multiple simultaneous warnings (electrical, drivetrain), system crash, occasionally no engine start possible

2,000–5,000 € from 50,000 km
!! Intake Valve Carbon Buildup

Direct petrol injection without valve wetting allows blowby gases and EGR deposits to bake onto intake valves. On the 4.0 TFSI, this is accelerated especially by high boost pressures.

Symptoms: Power loss under load, poor throttle response, occasional cold-start stumbling, increased consumption

800–1,800 € from 80,000 km
!! Start-Stop Shutting Down Too Early

Start-stop system shuts off the engine before the vehicle has come to a complete standstill. Delayed restart can impair brake booster assistance.

Symptoms: Engine shuts off during roll-out phase, brake pedal briefly hard/stiff, delayed engine restart when pulling away

0–500 €
!! Crankcase Ventilation — Oil in Intake Tract SQ7/SQ8

On the SQ7/SQ8 DCU, PCV and oil separator are subject to the same wear as on RS derivatives. In SUV use with frequent short trips, the condensate load on the PCV system increases.

Symptoms: Oil vapour from breather openings, blue exhaust fumes, increased oil consumption, rough running after oil loss

400–1,400 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbo Oil Strainer and Oil Supply — SQ7/SQ8 Variant

The DCU engine in the SQ7/SQ8 is also affected by the oil strainer issue. Check whether the revised oil strainer (079115175G) is fitted. In SUV use with towing, thermal turbo loading increases.

Symptoms: Turbo whistling, power loss, blue smoke from exhaust, engine oil level drops faster than normal

500–12,000 € from 100,000 km
!! ZF8HP — Increased Wear Under Towing

The SQ7/SQ8 is frequently used with a trailer, which places heavy thermal loads on the ZF8HP gearbox. Insufficient ATF maintenance accelerates torque converter wear; oil change every 50,000 km recommended when towing.

Symptoms: Gearbox jerk under heavy trailer load, shift hesitation when accelerating with trailer, gearbox overheating warning on long uphill sections

1,500–5,000 € from 130,000 km
! CoD Spark Plugs — SQ7/SQ8 Critical Replacement Interval

The cylinder deactivation on the DCU in the SQ7/SQ8 stresses the spark plugs of the deactivated cylinders. With SUV driving profiles (a lot of partial load), CoD frequency is high, leading to accelerated wear.

Symptoms: Misfire warning after CoD reactivation, stumbling at low rpm, engine warning light P0301–P0308

250–700 € from 45,000 km
! Intake Valve Coking — Direct Injection Hot-V

The Hot-V direct injection means intake valves are no longer cleaned by fuel. Crankcase ventilation oil mist deposits carbon on the valves; buildup reduces cylinder charge.

Symptoms: Rough idle, slight power loss, increased fuel consumption, cold-start problems after long standstill

300–800 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: Faulty Airbag Crash Sensors

Faulty sensors in both front doors can affect side airbags, head airbags and belt tensioners. RAPEX notification INFO/00089/21, April 2021. Free repair at authorised dealer.

0–0 €
!! Other Recall: Fire Risk When Charging — PHEV

High-voltage battery cell modules can overheat when charging and cause a vehicle fire. KBA action 93QQ affects Q8 PHEV (60 TFSI e) from production period 08/2019–07/2024. Software update as fix, approx. 60 minutes workshop visit.

0–0 €
!! Gearbox Recall: Gearbox Oil Loss — Gearbox Cooling

Oil can leak from the automatic gearbox cooling lines. Gearbox oil on the road increases accident risk. NHTSA campaign 20V272000, 531 vehicles affected.

0–0 €
!! Suspension Recall: Rear Axle Nut Incorrectly Torqued

On Q8 models from 2019–2021 (action 42L1) an incorrectly torqued rear axle nut can alter wheel alignment and affect driving stability. Free repair at dealer.

0–0 €
!! Suspension Air Suspension — Compressor and Air Bag Integrity

The Q8 4M air suspension shows typical weaknesses on residual pressure hold valves (approx. 50 € part) and air bags. Warning light illuminates, vehicle drops on one axle, compressor runs continuously to the point of overheating.

400–2,500 € from 100,000 km
! Electronics MMI Crashes and Driver Assistance Failures

The Q8 MMI system crashes or loses favourite settings. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) sporadically reports 'unavailable'. The parking assistance system and head-up display can also be affected by software faults.

300–1,500 €
