Audi Q8
V6 diesel with 200–210 kW, also marketed as 50 TDI. Most powerful six-cylinder diesel variant with enormous pulling power.
Anxiety engine — costly weakness looms
286 hp 3.0L with a known issue: camshaft material defect (recall risk). The risk of expensive repairs overshadows any driving pleasure.
Engine Weaknesses 5
EA897 EVO engines with camshaft serial numbers CRT 000001–175973 and CZV 000001–003450 (production years 2014–2017) suffer from a material defect. The camshafts can break and cause irreparable engine damage.
Symptoms: Heavy ticking or knocking from the engine clearly beyond normal diesel combustion sounds; engine loss from complete camshaft fracture
The revised EA897 with two timing chains shows chain wear with poor oil maintenance or long service intervals. Repair costs of €3,000–5,000 are typical for the V6 double-chain drive.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (1–3 seconds), especially after extended standstill; audible under load with severe elongation
The 3.0 TDI V6 in the A6 and A7 shows pronounced EGR coking at higher mileages. Deposits can block the intake duct by up to 80% and require extensive dismantling for cleaning.
Symptoms: Juddering and misfires under part-throttle, rough idle especially during warm-up, significantly increased consumption
The 3.0 TDI in the A6/A7 C7 uses an SCR catalyst with AdBlue. Clogged DPFs from short-trip use and AdBlue dosing system faults are well-known issues. DPF replacement costs are high.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, AdBlue warning, power reduction, in limp mode a maximum of 3 restarts without repair
The 3.0 TDI in the A6 C7 frequently shows oil loss from the upper sump gasket at higher mileages. The repair is complex and sometimes requires gearbox removal.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, oil smell at operating temperature, dropping oil level between services
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Faulty sensors in both front doors can affect side airbags, head airbags and belt tensioners. RAPEX notification INFO/00089/21, April 2021. Free repair at authorised dealer.
High-voltage battery cell modules can overheat when charging and cause a vehicle fire. KBA action 93QQ affects Q8 PHEV (60 TFSI e) from production period 08/2019–07/2024. Software update as fix, approx. 60 minutes workshop visit.
Oil can leak from the automatic gearbox cooling lines. Gearbox oil on the road increases accident risk. NHTSA campaign 20V272000, 531 vehicles affected.
On Q8 models from 2019–2021 (action 42L1) an incorrectly torqued rear axle nut can alter wheel alignment and affect driving stability. Free repair at dealer.
The Q8 4M air suspension shows typical weaknesses on residual pressure hold valves (approx. 50 € part) and air bags. Warning light illuminates, vehicle drops on one axle, compressor runs continuously to the point of overheating.
The Q8 MMI system crashes or loses favourite settings. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) sporadically reports 'unavailable'. The parking assistance system and head-up display can also be affected by software faults.
