Audi Q7
V8 diesel with 250 kW after model update. Uprated version of the 4.2 TDI with improved emissions system. Enormous torque of 800 Nm.
Practical SUV powertrain
340 hp 4.2L for everyday use β a solid all-round package without sporting ambitions.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Like the predecessor BTR, both turbochargers are susceptible. Faulty injectors can damage the turbos through exhaust overheating. On the Q7, replacement is particularly labour-intensive due to the tight packaging.
Symptoms: Power loss, whistling noises, blue smoke, engine warning light, limp mode
The CCFA (facelift 4.2 TDI, from 2012) is improved but still suffers from timing chain wear. Rattling from cold start occurs with neglected maintenance. Replacement requires 27 hours of labour.
Symptoms: Rattling at cold start, chain noise under load changes, engine warning light
Like the BTR, the CCFA has two MAF sensors fitted, both of which can fail or produce faults. A P1159 fault ratio between the sensors triggers limp mode. Replacement is relatively inexpensive but diagnosis is involved.
Symptoms: Limp mode, fault code P1159, power loss, elevated fuel consumption
The DPF on the 4.2 TDI V8 must regenerate regularly. With frequent short-trip use it cannot fully burn off and becomes blocked. A clogged DPF generates back-pressure that can damage the turbos.
Symptoms: DPF warning, power reduction, regeneration cycle takes unusually long, elevated fuel consumption
The intake manifold and EGR valve on the 4.2 TDI carbon up heavily. Disassembly on the Q7, positioned above the gearbox, is very labour-intensive β up to 10 hours just for removal.
Symptoms: Power loss, juddering under load, EGR fault code, elevated fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Air bags become porous, the WABCO compressor overheats and fails. The rear axle typically drops first. Full repairs regularly cost 2,000β3,500 β¬.
The 3.0 TDI timing chain sits on the gearbox side and can elongate from 120,000 km. Engine and gearbox must be separated β cost 3,500β8,000 β¬. Chain jumping means total engine damage.
The vehicle weight of over 2.3 tonnes leads to heavily elevated brake wear. Pad wear as early as 22,000 km in urban traffic documented. Front disc and pad change costs up to 1,600 β¬.
The panoramic roof drainage channels block with leaves and dirt. Water runs down the A-pillar to the fuse box and can damage electronics.
The keyless entry receiver antennas sit in the door handles and fail due to moisture and thermal expansion. Vehicle can only be opened with mechanical key.
