CASB 3.0L TDI V6 245 hp Automatic All-wheel drive 2011–2015
βœ– Stay Away!
Engine CASB βœ– Stay Away! 23,550–64,600 €

V6 diesel with 180 kW in the Q7 4L facelift. Slightly uprated variant with identical basic architecture.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Anxiety engine β€” costly failure looming

245 hp 3.0L with a known problem: complex four-chain drive stretched. The risk of expensive repairs overshadows any driving pleasure.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Complex Four-Chain Drive Stretched

The early EA897 3.0 TDI (pre-2010) has four timing chains β€” one per camshaft, one connecting chain, and one for the oil pump. Chain wear from 150,000 km is known; repair requires 15–20 labour hours.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling at cold start that subsides after 1–3 seconds; with severe stretch also rattling under load

2,500–5,000 € from 160,000 km
!! Ring Land Fracture β€” High-Pressure Piston Failure

On the 2.5 TFSI (CASB), the piston ring land fractures under high combustion pressure. Early units built before June/July 2012 are particularly affected. Engine rebuild from approx. €7,900.

Symptoms: Increasing oil consumption as an early warning sign, then rough idle, compression loss, engine warning light

7,900–19,800 € from 80,000 km
!! Swirl Flap Screw Comes Loose β€” Engine Damage

On the CASB 2.5 TFSI 5-cylinder (RS3 8P), an intake swirl flap screw works loose and falls into the cylinder. Compression failure and total engine damage are the consequence.

Symptoms: Sudden engine warning light, severe juddering/misfires, zero compression in the affected cylinder

6,000–19,800 € from 60,000 km
!! EGR and Intake System Heavily Coked

The 3.0 TDI EA897 tends to heavy coking in the intake system at higher mileages, especially after the 23x6 software update. Deposits can block the intake channel by up to 80%.

Symptoms: Juddering and misfires at low rpm, rough cold-running behaviour, elevated fuel consumption, near-zero airflow in severe cases

800–1,500 € from 120,000 km
!! Particulate Filter Blockage

The DPF on the 3.0 TDI cannot regenerate sufficiently with heavy short-trip use and becomes blocked. In an SUV like the Q5, short city runs are particularly problematic.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, noticeable power loss, elevated oil level (fuel dilution from aborted regeneration)

1,200–3,500 € from 130,000 km
!! Injector Seals Leaking

The injectors on the 3.0 TDI can develop leaking seals at higher mileages. Timely renewal of O-ring and copper sealing ring prevents secondary damage. Replacing all injector seals at once is recommended.

Symptoms: Oil residue around the injectors, faint oil smell under the bonnet, occasional misfires

200–900 € from 180,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 5

!! Suspension Air Suspension: Compressor and Air Bag Failures

Air bags become porous, the WABCO compressor overheats and fails. The rear axle typically drops first. Full repairs regularly cost 2,000–3,500 €.

800–3,500 € from 100,000 km
!! Other 3.0 TDI Timing Chain: Elongation and Engine Damage Risk

The 3.0 TDI timing chain sits on the gearbox side and can elongate from 120,000 km. Engine and gearbox must be separated β€” cost 3,500–8,000 €. Chain jumping means total engine damage.

3,500–8,000 € from 130,000 km
!! Brakes Brakes: Excessive Wear Due to Vehicle Weight

The vehicle weight of over 2.3 tonnes leads to heavily elevated brake wear. Pad wear as early as 22,000 km in urban traffic documented. Front disc and pad change costs up to 1,600 €.

450–1,600 € from 50,000 km
!! Body Panoramic Roof: Blocked Drainage and Water Ingress

The panoramic roof drainage channels block with leaves and dirt. Water runs down the A-pillar to the fuse box and can damage electronics.

50–500 € from 80,000 km
! Electronics Keyless Entry Antennas in Door Handles Failed

The keyless entry receiver antennas sit in the door handles and fail due to moisture and thermal expansion. Vehicle can only be opened with mechanical key.

150–500 € from 80,000 km
