Audi Q7
Revised V6 diesel with 176 kW after model update. Improved emissions treatment and more torque. Robust long-distance engine.
Anxiety engine β costly failure looming
239 hp 3.0L with a known problem: timing chain stretch and guide rail breakage. The risk of expensive repairs overshadows any driving pleasure.
Engine Weaknesses 5
Like all early 3.0 TDI engines, the CASA shows typical timing chain wear. Rattling noises at cold start and during load changes indicate a stretched chain or faulty tensioners. Repair requires 15β20 labour hours.
Symptoms: Rattling or slapping at cold start, load-change noises, engine warning light, timing chain fault codes
On the CASA in the Q7, cases have been documented where all 6 injectors needed replacement. Fault messages for low fuel rail pressure despite injector replacement point to high-pressure pump problems.
Symptoms: Fuel pressure fault message, difficult starting, engine misfires, elevated fuel consumption
The dual-mass flywheel (DMF) on the 3.0 TDI CASA wears from the high diesel torque. Typically around 150,000 km, often replaced together with the clutch. DMF part cost approx. β¬500β800, plus 5 hours labour.
Symptoms: Droning and rattling in the drivetrain, vibrations, juddering when pulling away, load-change vibrations
The DPF on the CASA cannot regenerate sufficiently with frequent short-trip driving and becomes blocked. In the Q7 with its heavy weight and all-wheel drive, fuel consumption and soot load are particularly high.
Symptoms: DPF warning in the instrument cluster, power reduction, elevated fuel consumption, soot smell
The EGR system on the CASA has issues. Audi issued a recall for Q7 models from 2010β2017 due to EGR and thermal window problems. EGR coolers can also become blocked.
Symptoms: Power loss, elevated fuel consumption, juddering under load, EGR system fault code
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Air bags become porous, the WABCO compressor overheats and fails. The rear axle typically drops first. Full repairs regularly cost 2,000β3,500 β¬.
The 3.0 TDI timing chain sits on the gearbox side and can elongate from 120,000 km. Engine and gearbox must be separated β cost 3,500β8,000 β¬. Chain jumping means total engine damage.
The vehicle weight of over 2.3 tonnes leads to heavily elevated brake wear. Pad wear as early as 22,000 km in urban traffic documented. Front disc and pad change costs up to 1,600 β¬.
The panoramic roof drainage channels block with leaves and dirt. Water runs down the A-pillar to the fuse box and can damage electronics.
The keyless entry receiver antennas sit in the door handles and fail due to moisture and thermal expansion. Vehicle can only be opened with mechanical key.
