Audi Q7
V8 naturally aspirated engine with 257 kW and direct injection. Effortless performance for the large Q7, but high fuel consumption. Timing chain on the gearbox side requires an involved replacement.
V8 power in a two-tonne SUV
The 4.2 FSI V8 moves the 2.2-tonne Q7 briskly β 0β100 in 7.4 seconds is respectable for a vehicle of this size. A sporting feel, however, is absent: comfort and composure dominate.
Engine Weaknesses 8
In the heavy Q7 (over 2 tonnes) chain tensioners and guide rails wear particularly quickly. Chain jump leads to engine damage. Engine removal necessary. Cases documented from 80,000 km.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rough engine noises, engine warning light with camshaft fault codes, power loss
The 4.2 FSI in the heavy Q7 shows elevated oil consumption due to the permanently high load. Valve stem seals and piston rings wear earlier. Particularly pronounced in SUV use with a trailer.
Symptoms: Oil level falls between changes, slight blue haze on pull-away, oil consumption over 1 L/1,000 km
Direct injection without valve washing leads to carbon deposits. In the Q7, often used for city short trips, this is particularly severe. Power loss and rough idle β only mechanical cleaning helps.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough idle, poor throttle response, increased fuel consumption
The water pump on the 4.2 FSI in the heavy Q7 is subject to higher thermal loads. Failure after 100,000β140,000 km from bearing wear. Overheating threatens if ignored.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, rising temperature gauge, coolant smell, overheating warning
The ZF Tiptronic gearbox in the Q7 4.2 FSI requires an oil change every 60,000 km (not stipulated by Audi, but necessary). Neglect leads to juddering and gearbox failure.
Symptoms: Shift judder, delayed gear changes, rough driving, gearbox overheating
The FSI high-pressure pump located in the engine valley can fail after 80,000β100,000 km. Starting problems and severe power loss result. Access is even more difficult on the Q7 than on other models.
Symptoms: Hard starting, massive power drop, jerking under load, fuel smell
Timing chain cover and camshaft seals develop leaks. Oil runs down the front of the engine. Access is particularly restricted on the Q7 with its transverse V8.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, oil film on engine front face, oil smell after driving
V8 with 8 ignition coils shows elevated failure rate. In the Q7 with heavy duty use and long motorway runs, loads are particularly high. Single coil replacement cheap; full set more expensive.
Symptoms: Misfires, jerking, engine warning light, rough idle especially on cold start
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Air bags become porous, the WABCO compressor overheats and fails. The rear axle typically drops first. Full repairs regularly cost 2,000β3,500 β¬.
The 3.0 TDI timing chain sits on the gearbox side and can elongate from 120,000 km. Engine and gearbox must be separated β cost 3,500β8,000 β¬. Chain jumping means total engine damage.
The vehicle weight of over 2.3 tonnes leads to heavily elevated brake wear. Pad wear as early as 22,000 km in urban traffic documented. Front disc and pad change costs up to 1,600 β¬.
The panoramic roof drainage channels block with leaves and dirt. Water runs down the A-pillar to the fuse box and can damage electronics.
The keyless entry receiver antennas sit in the door handles and fail due to moisture and thermal expansion. Vehicle can only be opened with mechanical key.
