Audi Q3
2.0-litre TDI with 150 hp β EA288 unit with moderate common rail injection. Solid, low-maintenance diesel of the newer generation without pump-injector issues. DPF clogging possible with short-trip use; occasional EGR valve cleaning recommended. Overall one of the more reliable TDI units.
Practical everyday SUV drive
193 hp 2.0L for everyday use β solid overall package without sporting ambitions.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EA288 2.0 TDI EGR valve becomes coked with soot deposits, especially during frequent short trips. Engine hesitation and power loss are typical early symptoms.
Symptoms: Engine hesitation under load, power loss, limp mode, fault code P0401
The camshaft module oil seal on the EA288 frequently leaks and drips oil onto the timing belt. This significantly shortens timing belt life and must be detected early.
Symptoms: Oil puddles under vehicle, oil smell, oil visible on timing belt during inspection
The DPF clogs during frequent short-trip use as regeneration temperature is not reached. Soot particles accumulate. Forced regeneration or filter replacement required.
Symptoms: Exhaust warning light, engine power reduction, frequent fuel stops due to elevated consumption
From around 200,000 km the EA288 turbochargers show bearing and impeller wear. Oil leaks from a faulty camshaft seal accelerate the process.
Symptoms: Whistling noise on acceleration, power loss, bluish smoke, elevated oil consumption
Control piston of the water pump in early EA288 units (up to September 2014) is failure-prone. Coolant temperature rises to critical levels. Rectified in later production.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature warning, coolant loss, overheating indicator
EGR cooler tends to accumulate soot, particularly with short-trip use. Awkward installation position makes cleaning or replacement time-consuming.
Symptoms: Black exhaust smoke, increased consumption, power loss, engine warning light
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Haldex Gen 5 coupling pre-charge pump fails due to oil sludge from an overdue oil change. The AWD fails unnoticed. Change Haldex oil every 40,000 km. Quattro models only.
An inadequately secured decorative engine cover can shift and contact hot parts (turbocharger), melt and start an engine bay fire. KBA action number 10H8. 2,714 vehicles affected.
Supplier manufacturing defect led to incorrectly executed weld joint between brake pedal plate and brake pedal. 843 vehicles affected, automatic gearbox only.
FWD models with the 7-speed DQ200 dry clutch gearbox judder on pull-away in urban traffic. Quattro models with the wet DQ381 significantly less problematic. Software update helps temporarily.
Panoramic roof drainage channels block or get damaged β water runs from the headliner into the footwell. Audi acknowledges the problem under TPI 2059326/2. Repair sometimes requires replacement of the entire panoramic roof.
Parasitic drain from a frozen emergency call system (Audi connect Emergency Call) keeps the control unit permanently awake. Battery is completely flat after just a few days of standing. Software update 91AD resolves the issue.
Front camera behind the windscreen fogs in wet and cold conditions. Matrix LED high beam, traffic sign recognition, Pre Sense and ACC all fail simultaneously. Windscreen replacement with camera heater is the fix.
