Audi Q3
EA888 Gen3B with 140 kW for Q2/Q3. Identical technology to CYRB, adapted for transverse installation in SUV platforms.
45 TFSI in the Q3 — powerful and practical
The 230-hp petrol engine is regarded as the most dynamic petrol unit in the Q3 F3 lineup: 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, strong from any rev range. The clear engine choice for the sporting Q3 buyer.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Integrated plastic water pump/thermostat housing cracks. Relevant in the SUV with higher vehicle weight and greater cooling demand. Typically from 60,000–100,000 km.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, coolant smell
Timing chain stretches from ~90,000–110,000 km. SUV-typical use with frequent city driving stresses the chain more. Gen3B tensioner improved but the fundamental weakness remains.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, P0016/P0017 fault codes
Variable oil pump delivers insufficient oil pressure at idle and in city driving. SUVs with frequent stop-and-go traffic are especially affected. Ticking from the valvetrain is an early warning sign.
Symptoms: Ticking after cold start, camshaft phaser fault codes, oil pressure warning
Direct injection deposits carbon on intake valves via EGR gases and oil mist. In SUV use (Q2, Q3) with frequent city driving, this is especially relevant. Walnut blasting every 50,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Power loss, rough cold start, P2015 tumble flap
PCV membrane valve tears from ageing. Intake air leak under boost pressure causes misfires and power loss.
Symptoms: Whistling noise, P2279, rough idle
Electronic wastegate actuator can absorb moisture and fail. Rattling at mid-rpm from linkage play. Typical issue of the Gen3B turbo family.
Symptoms: Rattling at 1800–2900 rpm, boost pressure fluctuations, P0299
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
The Haldex Gen 5 coupling pre-charge pump fails due to oil sludge from an overdue oil change. The AWD fails unnoticed. Change Haldex oil every 40,000 km. Quattro models only.
An inadequately secured decorative engine cover can shift and contact hot parts (turbocharger), melt and start an engine bay fire. KBA action number 10H8. 2,714 vehicles affected.
Supplier manufacturing defect led to incorrectly executed weld joint between brake pedal plate and brake pedal. 843 vehicles affected, automatic gearbox only.
FWD models with the 7-speed DQ200 dry clutch gearbox judder on pull-away in urban traffic. Quattro models with the wet DQ381 significantly less problematic. Software update helps temporarily.
Panoramic roof drainage channels block or get damaged — water runs from the headliner into the footwell. Audi acknowledges the problem under TPI 2059326/2. Repair sometimes requires replacement of the entire panoramic roof.
Parasitic drain from a frozen emergency call system (Audi connect Emergency Call) keeps the control unit permanently awake. Battery is completely flat after just a few days of standing. Software update 91AD resolves the issue.
Front camera behind the windscreen fogs in wet and cold conditions. Matrix LED high beam, traffic sign recognition, Pre Sense and ACC all fail simultaneously. Windscreen replacement with camera heater is the fix.
