The three-motor S variant (370 kW) uses the same GE-platform battery. LG E61V cell modules can develop voltage losses and be thermally overloaded. Recall 93U9/93V2 for MY 2018–2022.
Symptoms: Range reduction and power drop as early warning signs. In extreme cases fire risk without prior warning.
The front motor of the e-tron can also be affected by coolant leaks caused by seal failure. Individual cases are known; the rear motor is more commonly affected. Repair costs are comparably expensive.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops, drivetrain warning, power reduction, vehicle enters limp mode.
Identical MMI platform to all GE e-tron models. Blue screens and infotainment freezing are known especially on longer trips. Workshop visits only resolve the problem temporarily.
Symptoms: MMI display black or frozen, reversing camera failure, navigation dropout, voice control without function.
The three-motor configuration has a structurally higher base consumption in everyday use than two-motor variants. At 130 km/h on the motorway, consumption can exceed 35 kWh/100 km, severely reducing range.
Symptoms: Range indicator drops much faster than expected on motorway runs. Consumption approximately 30–40% above rated figure.
The e-tron S three-motor variant (GE platform) also uses asynchronous motors with the known howl during acceleration and regeneration. The noise is accepted by Audi as a design characteristic.
Symptoms: Howling or humming noise during acceleration and regenerative braking. Intensity varies between individual vehicles.
The charge port flap mechanism of the e-tron can jam or rattle after charging. Defects on both sides are known. Repair under warranty, but irritating given the high vehicle price.
Symptoms: Charge port flap does not open/close cleanly, rattling noises during charging, charging system fault message.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Recall for production years 2018–2022: technical deviations in certain LG energy cells can cause voltage drop and thermal overload. Fire risk. KBA ref.: 013462.
In approximately 2% of vehicles (2019–2021), the rotor shaft seal fails, allowing coolant to enter the motor housing. Complete motor replacement required. Warranty extension in the US to 10 years; EU standard is only 3 years.
Water can enter the high-voltage charge port through a defective seal, potentially causing short circuits. 2019 recall. Many owners report recurring problems despite repair.
The e-tron GE 12V backup battery is a known weak point and fails early. If it fails, the vehicle can no longer be unlocked or started. Regular replacement recommended.
The optional camera-based virtual exterior mirrors of the first generation develop condensation internally, which clouds the camera image. Models without a heating element are especially affected.
Brake discs rust quickly due to the infrequent use of the mechanical brake caused by regenerative braking. Typical EV problem. Regular brake cleaning drives recommended.
