Audi 60 TFSI e
EA839 V6 plug-in hybrid with 250 kW combustion engine and 100 kW electric motor for the A8 D5. Identical V6 to the DCBE, but with a larger battery (17.9 kWh) and more sophisticated integration into the executive saloon.
Luxury PHEV that works — never tried to be sporty
The A8 60 TFSI e is the most consistent PHEV: quiet pull-away, seamless transition, predictive recuperation via navigation. The PHEV concept was built around the limousine, not the other way round.
Engine Weaknesses 9
The structural weakness of the EA839 water pump is also present in the CZSE in the A8. If the pump fails, coolant can be drawn into the vacuum system and cause severe consequential damage.
Symptoms: Coolant level drops without external leak; P0299 fault code; overheating warning; engine limp mode.
The A8 D5 TFSI e high-voltage battery is part of recall 93QQ (production years 08/2019–07/2024). Defective cell modules can overheat during charging.
Symptoms: High-voltage battery warning message; charging process aborted; Audi advises not to charge externally until the update is applied.
The A8 D5 TFSI e hybrid transmission is the same unit as in the Q7/Q8. Mechatronics failures and clutch disc wear are known weak points.
Symptoms: Juddering on take-off; shift delays; gearbox fault message; vehicle enters limp mode.
After around 100,000 km the EA839 catalysts can disintegrate. On the A8 PHEV with frequent cold starts after electric phases, the thermal stress is particularly high.
Symptoms: Clattering noise from the exhaust area; engine power loss; increased fuel consumption.
Identical to the DCBE: EA839 3.0 TFSI is prone to cold-start timing chain rattle from inadequate non-return valves. In the A8 the higher vehicle weight places greater stress.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start; settling after 1–3 seconds.
The CZSE engine is affected by the EA839 internal oil consumption problem. Leaking seals and piston wear lead to higher oil demand.
Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between services; oil burn smell; blue smoke after overrun.
The PHEV battery in the A8 D5 loses capacity through ageing cycles. After 6–8 years approximately 70% remaining capacity remains, reducing the electric range from around 40 km to under 28 km.
Symptoms: Reduced electric range; under 20 km in winter.
The A8 as a full-size saloon has very high quiescent current draw from massage seats, air suspension, and comfort control units. The 12V battery can discharge quickly when the HV battery is empty.
Symptoms: Warning message 'battery low' after electric driving; comfort systems deactivated; vehicle will not start.
On the A8 TFSI e as well, intensive regenerative braking means the rear brake discs are rarely activated mechanically. Corrosion and MOT rejection are documented consequences.
Symptoms: Visually corroded brake discs; grinding when braking; MOT rejection.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
A contact fault in the seat heating cable can cause the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) to detect a malfunction and deactivate the passenger airbag. Affects A8 model years 2017–2020. Free repair at dealer.
High-voltage battery cell modules can overheat during charging, in extreme cases causing a vehicle fire. KBA action 93QQ, production period 08/2019–07/2024. Solution: software update with improved temperature monitoring and charge current limiting.
The adaptive air suspension on the A8 D5 shows weaknesses from 100,000–150,000 km: rear air bellows become porous, the compressor overheats from continuous running when bellows leak. Cold temperatures worsen the sealing of the rubber membranes.
The 48-volt electrical system of the A8 D5 can produce charging faults on the lithium-ion buffer battery. When it fails, numerous warnings appear on the instrument cluster (assistance systems unavailable, steering, engine shutdown warning). Replacement is expensive.
The rubberised soft-touch surfaces on light switches, trim panels and door inner handles peel off on virtually all vehicles with age. A sticky, greasy surface develops especially on frequently touched areas.
The digital instrument cluster (Virtual Cockpit) occasionally freezes and the navigation map stops updating. 2021 models were recalled due to a hardware fault in the connection cable (software solution). Older models are mostly resolved through software updates.
