– Be Careful
Engine CWUB – Be Careful 19,300–60,300 €

Hot-V design: both turbos sit in the V-angle between the cylinder banks, directly above the exhaust system. This shortens charge pipes and delivers lightning-fast response without noticeable turbo lag, but concentrates heat and oil stress in one place. Audi had to issue recall 21H7 in 2022 for all vehicles built between 2012–2017: an overly fine oil strainer in the turbo oil circuit clogged — total turbo failure in many cases. The sound is muted by engine encapsulation, but has character. The overall performance — 560 PS, eight-speed Tiptronic, quattro — makes the C7 RS6/RS7 the most competent everyday fast car of its era. Always verify recall status before purchase.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

RS6 tech in Sportback form — the prettier silhouette

Same V8 as the RS6 C7, but the Sportback roofline makes the RS7 the more elegant statement. Functionally identical, emotionally different — less wagon pragmatism, more GT. On the Autobahn indistinguishable, in the parking lot the head-turner.

Engine Weaknesses 10

!! Recall 21H7 — oil strainer blocks turbo supply

The overly fine oil strainer in the oil feed to both turbochargers can become blocked with carbon deposits, cutting off turbo lubrication. KBA recall 21H7 for vehicles up to March 2017 (12,204 in Germany).

Symptoms: Sudden power loss, misfires, in the worst case complete engine failure without warning

0–500 €
!! Camshaft wear — head and shaft as a unit

The camshafts are factory-matched to their respective cylinder heads; on wear, the head and camshaft must be replaced as a unit, which significantly increases repair costs.

Symptoms: Ticking from the valvetrain, rough running, power loss at high rpm

5,000–15,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Timing chain stretched — V8 chain drive

Complex chain drive; idle fluctuations with camshaft synchronisation fault codes may indicate stretched chains or broken guide rails.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, idle fluctuations, camshaft position fault codes (P0017, P0022)

3,000–8,000 € from 160,000 km
!! Turbo oil drain lines coked — bearing seal failure

The oil drain lines of the hot-V turbochargers coke up from heat after shutdown. Coking blocks the oil return; oil pooling leads to shaft seal failure and oil loss into the turbocharger housing.

Symptoms: Blue smoke at idle, oil loss from the turbocharger, whistling or rattling from the turbo area, power loss during acceleration

1,500–8,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Turbo hoses and seals leaking

The bi-turbo system generates high boost pressure; hoses and seals age under thermal load. Leaks trigger limp mode.

Symptoms: Significant power loss, limp mode, characteristic hissing from boost air leakage, worsening turbo lag

200–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Elevated oil consumption — V8 bi-turbo

The 4.0 TFSI shows noticeably elevated oil consumption that increases with aggressive driving. Insufficient lubrication from a low oil level can damage the expensive turbochargers.

Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between services; blue haze rarely visible as catalysts oxidise it

3,000–8,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Crankcase ventilation — oil entering intake tract

A defective crankcase ventilation system routes engine oil into the intake tract. Particularly at high mileage: the oil separator and PCV are an integrated component on the 4.0 TFSI and are expensive to replace.

Symptoms: Blue smoke, elevated oil consumption, oily dipstick with foamy residue, power loss, engine hesitation

500–1,500 € from 130,000 km
!! ZF8HP automatic gearbox — torque converter wear

The ZF8HP Tiptronic gearbox in the RS6 handles up to 750 Nm of torque. Without gearbox oil changes (recommended every 60,000 km) the torque converter, shift valves, and clutch pack wear out.

Symptoms: Shift jerk, delayed shifts, whining from the gearbox area, gear-change hesitation; in severe cases limp mode

2,000–6,000 € from 160,000 km
!! Intercooler hoses leaking — power loss

The charge-air cooler hoses between the turbocharger and intercooler become brittle from high-temperature operation. Leaks cause boost pressure loss; if the intercooler connection is not repaired, turbocharger damage follows.

Symptoms: Power loss under load, whistling noise during acceleration, increased consumption, engine warning light, boost pressure fault

200–800 € from 80,000 km
! Spark plugs — short service interval from hot-V

In the hot-V layout spark plugs are difficult to access and under high thermal load. CoD-deactivated cylinders (2, 3, 5, 8) in particular show increased wear. Recommended replacement interval: every 40,000 km.

Symptoms: Slight hesitation under part throttle, misfire warning light, rough idle, increased consumption

300–700 € from 40,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Suspension Air Suspension Compressor and Bellows Defective

The optional air suspension on the A7 4G is prone to compressor failure and leaking air bellows. Leaking bellows cause the compressor to run continuously until it overheats.

1,500–3,500 € from 120,000 km
!! Other Recall: Oil in Brake Servo (3.0 TDI)

3.0 TDI models produced March–Dec. 2012: oil can enter the brake servo via vacuum lines and damage its membrane.

0–0 €
!! Gearbox S-Tronic DL501 Premature Clutch Wear

The S-Tronic DL501 dual-clutch gearbox suffers from premature clutch wear in frequent stop-start traffic. Regular gearbox oil changes every 60,000 km are necessary.

1,500–5,000 € from 100,000 km
! Suspension Multi-Link Axle Wear

TÜV reports note increasing axle and strut deficiencies with mileage. Rubber bushes and control arms wear, especially at the front axle.

400–1,200 € from 120,000 km
! Electronics 12V Battery — ADAC Breakdown Hotspot

The 12V vehicle battery is a primary issue on the A7 4G. The complex electrical system drains the battery quickly, especially on short runs and in winter.

200–400 € from 80,000 km
i Interior Creaking and Rattling Door Panels

Door panels and B/C-pillar trim develop creaking and rattling over time. Known issue on the A6/A7 4G.

0–200 € from 80,000 km
