Fun Factor? Decent

Solid everyday engine — does its job

150 hp 1.5L for everyday use. Watch for known weak points.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Elevated oil consumption from piston rings

The 1.5 TFSI EA211 Evo tends to elevated oil consumption of 0.5–1 litre per 1,000 km at higher mileages. Piston ring and crankcase ventilation problems are the cause.

Symptoms: Oil level drops noticeably between oil changes; blue smoke when accelerating is possible

2,000–4,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Gasoline particulate filter (GPF) clogged

The DADA gasoline particulate filter tends to clog with frequent short-trip use as the required regeneration temperature is not reached. Chemical cleaning is no longer sufficient from around 120,000 km.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, noticeable power reduction, increased fuel consumption

800–2,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Turbocharger wear from carbon deposits

Carbon deposits and thermal load cause bearing failure or wastegate malfunction on the EA211 Evo turbocharger, especially on VTG variants and with frequent short-trip use.

Symptoms: Power loss, whistling or rattling under load, irregular boost pressure

1,500–3,000 $ from 120,000 km
! Juddering during cylinder deactivation (ACT)

The active cylinder deactivation (ACT) causes noticeable vibrations and hesitation when switching between 2- and 4-cylinder operation, especially with manual gearboxes during cold running.

Symptoms: Juddering or vibration when accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear, especially after cold start; occasional engine warning light

0–200 $ from 20,000 km
! EGR valve and intake system coking

Despite direct injection, the DADA engine is prone to coking of the intake system and EGR valve, especially with long oil-change intervals or predominantly city driving.

Symptoms: Rough idle, increased fuel consumption, occasional fault messages for the mass air flow sensor

300–800 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Cooling Defective Coolant Valve and Coolant Loss

Defective coolant valves cause coolant loss that can silently lead to overheating. Temperature sensors and thermostat housing are a weak point from 60,000–100,000 km.

200–800 $ from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Control Arm Rubber Bushings Prematurely Worn

The rubber bushings in the upper control arms wear prematurely, in some cases from as early as 60,000–80,000 km. The issue is said to have been fixed only with the 2019 facelift.

300–900 $ from 70,000 km
!! Suspension Premature Inner Tyre Flank Wear

Certain 19-inch tyre combinations on the B9 lead to premature wear on the inner flanks. The cause is a suspension setup not optimally tuned for larger wheels. Regular wheel alignment recommended.

400–1,200 $ from 30,000 km
!! Gearbox S tronic (DSG) Juddering and Mechatronics Failure

The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox judders when pulling away and at low speeds. The mechatronics unit can become defective.

700–6,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Cooling Water Pump and Thermostat Housing Failure

Water pump and thermostat housing typically fail between 60,000 and 170,000 km. A well-known weak point on the 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI.

300–1,000 $ from 100,000 km
! Gearbox S tronic Idle Judder

The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox exhibits a known juddering in D and R at idle that Audi classes as within the state of the art. Diesel variants may additionally creep.

500–2,500 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics MMI and Bluetooth Connectivity Faults

The MMI infotainment system frequently exhibits Bluetooth connectivity problems in facelift models: choppy music playback, missed ringtones. Software updates do not always provide a permanent fix.
