βœ– Stay Away!
Engine CCWA βœ– Stay Away! 12,917–42,900 $

V6 diesel with 176 kW. Capable six-cylinder for Q5 and A6. Timing chain at rear of engine, a known issue at high mileage.

Fun Factor? Decent

Refined multi-cylinder β€” relaxed cruising

239 hp 3.0L with a pleasant, refined character. Relaxed long-distance cruiser without sporting ambitions. Factor in the known weak points.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Chain tensioner cold-start rattle

The CCWA 3.0 TDI rattles on cold start due to a pressureless chain tensioner. Chain drive C is most commonly affected and the most accessible repair point. Cost from 650 euros.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling immediately after a cold start for 1–5 seconds, sounds like loose metal clattering from the engine bay; disappears once oil pressure builds.

650–4,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! Piston Slap β€” Alusil Block

The CCWA 3.0 TFSI uses an Alusil cylinder block similar to the 3.2 FSI. When using Longlife oil (low HTHS values), the piston tends to tilt in the cylinder β€” engine damage risk.

Symptoms: Knocking/rattling noise from the engine, increased oil consumption, juddering under load, power loss.

4,000–13,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! EGR valve soot deposits

The EGR system on the CCWA 3.0 TDI accumulates soot deposits, particularly in city use. EGR cooler leaks can cause coolant loss.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, rough idle, limp-home mode, occasional coolant loss from a leaking EGR cooler.

238–900 $ from 170,000 km
!! Oil heat exchanger leaking β€” oil loss

The oil heat exchanger (oil cooler) on the 3.0 TDI V6 develops leaks causing oil loss. An improved replacement unit is available as a retrofit kit.

Symptoms: Oil warning light, visible oil film under the car or in the engine bay, oil level dropping despite top-ups, oil smell after driving.

200–800 $ from 130,000 km
!! Dual-mass flywheel worn

The dual-mass flywheel (DMF) on the CCWA wears at high mileages. Replacement is sensibly combined with a clutch change. DMF parts cost approximately 760 euros plus clutch.

Symptoms: Rattling at idle especially after a cold start, vibration when pulling away or changing gear, drivetrain droning.

1,200–2,500 $ from 160,000 km
!! Timing Chain Rattles β€” Chain Tensioner

On the CCWA 3.0 TFSI supercharger, all chains and tensioners were proactively replaced at 75,000 km. Timing chain wear is a known issue on this generation.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, sounds like a loose chain, disappears once oil pressure builds up.

2,000–5,000 $ from 80,000 km
! Supercharger V-Belt β€” Regular Replacement Required

On the CCWA 3.0 TFSI supercharger, the supercharger V-belt must be replaced at shorter intervals (approx. every 60,000 km). If it breaks, supercharger damage and overheating are likely.

Symptoms: Whistling on acceleration, power loss, visible crack in the belt.

200–800 $ from 60,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 9

!! Gearbox Multitronic Gearbox Early Failure

The CVT Multitronic (type 0AW) is known for frequent failures through 2011. Juddering, imprecise shifting or complete failure from around 150,000 km. Expensive reconditioning or replacement required.

2,000–6,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! Electronics Water Ingress via Rear Lights and Electrical System Weakness

Water ingress through the rear lights can short-circuit the wiring harness and cause expensive electrical damage. A weak starter battery is a recurring issue since many systems draw power continuously.

200–2,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Front Axle and Control Arm Wear

The complex front axle shows wear at higher mileages in suspension components, control arm bushings and springs. Brake hoses regularly appear on repair lists.

300–1,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Cooling Coolant Water Pump Leaking

On TFSI petrol engines the coolant water pump is a known wear point between 50,000 and 100,000 km. Loose hose clamps can also lead to coolant loss.

200–700 $ from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox S tronic Clutch Wear

The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is sensitive to frequent city driving and towing. Clutch judder and shifting problems occur. Regular gearbox oil changes extend service life.

1,000–3,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Suspension Suspension Springs Broken

Springs break through corrosion on the powder coating after stone chip damage. Front axle springs particularly affected. A broken spring can damage the tyre.

300–800 $ from 130,000 km
!! Brakes Brake Caliper Seizing (Rear)

Rear brake calipers seize, particularly after winter periods. Defective seals allow water ingress and pistons corrode.

200–600 $ from 100,000 km
! Electronics MMI Infotainment System Failure

The MMI system frequently fails due to overvoltage damage during battery replacement or moisture damage. Control unit or interface box defective.

179–900 $ from 120,000 km
i Other Rattling Exhaust Heat Shields

Loose heat shields on the exhaust system are a frequent source of noise. Simple repair by reshaping or renewing the fixings.

50–200 $ from 100,000 km
