Audi A4
High-revving V6 direct injection engine with 195 kW. Timing chain on gearbox side, involved replacement. Very refined engine with good throttle response.
Refined multi-cylinder β relaxed cruising
265 hp 3.2L with a pleasant, refined character. Relaxed long-distance cruiser without sporting ambitions. Factor in the known weak points.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The timing chain on the 3.2 FSI V6 is located at the gearbox end and is extremely difficult to access (approximately 24 working hours, engine or gearbox removal required). Chain stretch leads to engine damage. Repair 2,500β5,000 β¬.
Symptoms: Rattling noise on start, camshaft deviation fault codes, engine stumbling under load
The CALA 3.0 TDI, like all modern 3.0 TDI engines, has a complex timing chain system with four chains. Chain stretch causes timing offset and can cause engine damage. Repair is involved (15β20 hours labour).
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, power loss with severe stretch.
Isolated cases of engine damage on the CALA 3.2 FSI (also known by its B8 engine designation) at approximately 95,000 km from bearing failures. Expensive repair, often an economic write-off.
Symptoms: Knocking, power loss, oil pressure problems.
Reports of piston slap and increased oil consumption on the 3.2 FSI CALA. Longlife low-viscosity oil exacerbates timing chain problems. Significantly better with 5W-30 or 5W-40 higher-viscosity oil.
Symptoms: Knocking on cold running, increased oil consumption, blue smoke
The plastic water pump on the 3.2 FSI V6 can fail prematurely. A defective pump leads to overheating and can cause engine damage. Early preventive replacement recommended.
Symptoms: Coolant warning light, rising temperature, heater fails, coolant loss
The 3.2 FSI uses pure direct injection, causing carbon deposits on the intake valves. Noticeable power loss from 80,000β100,000 km. Walnut blasting recommended.
Symptoms: Power loss, rougher idle, worse cold-start response
Vehicle Weaknesses 9
The CVT Multitronic (type 0AW) is known for frequent failures through 2011. Juddering, imprecise shifting or complete failure from around 150,000 km. Expensive reconditioning or replacement required.
Water ingress through the rear lights can short-circuit the wiring harness and cause expensive electrical damage. A weak starter battery is a recurring issue since many systems draw power continuously.
The complex front axle shows wear at higher mileages in suspension components, control arm bushings and springs. Brake hoses regularly appear on repair lists.
On TFSI petrol engines the coolant water pump is a known wear point between 50,000 and 100,000 km. Loose hose clamps can also lead to coolant loss.
The S tronic dual-clutch gearbox is sensitive to frequent city driving and towing. Clutch judder and shifting problems occur. Regular gearbox oil changes extend service life.
Springs break through corrosion on the powder coating after stone chip damage. Front axle springs particularly affected. A broken spring can damage the tyre.
Rear brake calipers seize, particularly after winter periods. Defective seals allow water ingress and pistons corrode.
The MMI system frequently fails due to overvoltage damage during battery replacement or moisture damage. Control unit or interface box defective.
Loose heat shields on the exhaust system are a frequent source of noise. Simple repair by reshaping or renewing the fixings.
