Audi A4
Simple naturally aspirated engine with 75 kW and proven technology. Robust and low-maintenance, ideal for city use. Cam belt change every 120,000 km.
Worry engine — costly weakness looms
102 hp 1.6L with a known issue: timing belt idler pulley hardens — belt failure. The risk of expensive repairs overshadows any driving pleasure.
Engine Weaknesses 7
Timing belt idler pulleys can harden prematurely and cause belt failure. The change interval was therefore shortened from 120,000 to 90,000 km. Always replace rollers and water pump at the same time.
Symptoms: Whistling from belt drive, sudden engine stall, valve damage after belt failure
The plastic water pump impeller on the 1.6 MPI BSE is prone to blade fracture and leaks. Coolant loss and overheating risk if replacement is neglected.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, rising temperature, coolant smell
With age, the valve stem seals on the BSE 1.6 MPI become brittle and cause oil consumption. Not a piston ring problem, so no engine rebuild is needed. Repair is labour-intensive as the cylinder head must be partially disassembled.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on start-up, increased oil consumption (>0.3 l/1,000 km), oil smell from exhaust
A defective crankcase breather is a common cause of oil consumption and minor oil leaks on the 1.6 BSE. The replacement part is inexpensive; diagnosis is easy by removing the oil cap at idle.
Symptoms: Oil consumption, whistling noise, power drop, oil mist from engine
The 1.6 MPI BSE shows increasing oil consumption with age through valve stem seal wear. Not a piston ring issue — can be repaired at reasonable cost.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil level dropping gradually
The throttle body of the BSE 1.6 MPI gets contaminated by oil deposits from the crankcase breather. Cleaning every 80,000–100,000 km is advisable.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation, torque interruptions
On the BSE engine, the spark plugs for cylinders 2 and 3 sit under the intake manifold and are difficult to access. The extra labour involved often means spark plugs are changed less frequently than recommended.
Symptoms: Difficult starting, misfires, rough idle, increased fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
On the 2.0 TDI the hexagonal shaft of the oil pump drive can snap, causing immediate oil pressure loss and engine damage. Preventive replacement is recommended.
Airbags manufactured by Takata can deploy with excess pressure and propel metal fragments. Worldwide recall campaign.
Control arms and tie rod ends wear prematurely. Clunking and rumbling on poor surfaces. The multi-link front axle is maintenance-intensive.
Defective ignition coils can immobilise the engine or cause severe running roughness. Mainly affects 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines.
From model year 2004 Audi used partial bonding instead of full galvanisation. Wheel arches and sills are vulnerable to rust, especially on older examples without cavity protection.
Rear wheel bearings fail regularly on the A4 B7. Quattro models show increased wear.
